The School of Social Work has an outstanding opportunity for an Assistant Director for Advancement. Position Purpose

The Assistant Director for Advancement, as a key member of the School of Social Work’s advancement team, will help plan, manage and direct the School’s advancement activities and efforts to secure gifts primarily from individuals, and select corporations and foundations. Activities in the position involve extensive direct contact with the School’s diverse internal and external audiences, including alumni, friends, major donors, faculty, staff, volunteers, and representatives of organizations, corporations and foundations.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES Front-line Fundraising • Primary responsibility for developing, soliciting, and stewarding donors; developing and implementing strategies to identify, cultivate, visit, solicit and steward individuals capable of making annual, major, and planned gifts to the School of Social Work’s priorities. • Work to build a strong prospect discovery pipeline through managing a portfolio of annual fund prospects with the potential of becoming high-end annual fund and major gift prospects. • Develop written materials for solicitation and stewardship of annual giving level prospects, including annual solicitation, renewal and thank you letters. • Oversee and coordinate annual giving efforts with Central Advancement and advancement program coordinator, including the Student Calling Programs and direct mail activities. • Manage an ongoing portfolio of gift prospects with strategies and solicitations in place within a 12 month time frame. • Prepare written proposals, informational materials, endowment agreements, stewardship reports needed to secure and steward gifts. • Participate cooperatively with the University’s prospect management and tracking system. • Manage stewardship activities for the UW School of Social Work, including but not limited, to annual acknowledgements to endowment donors and thank you visits to donors. • Represent the School at University, community and professional functions as appropriate, providing staff support for advancement related activities in the School as needed. • As part of the University-wide annual development planning process, assist the Assistant Dean in establishing goals, objectives and strategies for the School’s development and advancement activities. Regularly evaluate programs, assess progress toward goals, and report on results to the Assistant Dean for Advancement. • Prepare briefing materials and guest profiles for the Dean, Assistant Dean for Advancement and other school leadership and volunteers. • Support and staff volunteer advisory committees as aligned with the fundraising priorities of the School of Social Work.

Discovery • Proactively reach out to qualify leads through cold calls and emails making 10 substantial contacts per week and an average of 1-2 visits per week. Solicit individual prospective donors when appropriate and qualify major gift prospects to proactively cultivate for additional future gifts. • Work with the Assistant Dean to develop techniques to start cold relationships and move them through the donor continuum to a gift conversation. • Work with fundraising colleagues in Regional and Planned Giving to develop and support strategies for activities and special events for qualification and solicitation efforts.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: • Bachelor's degree and three years of experience in development or fundraising or related field.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: • Ability to work collegially and effectively with internal and external partners and constituencies. • Demonstrated strong computer skills, including relational databases and Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint for correspondence, special reports, spreadsheets, databases, forms, etc.

Desired Qualifications • Professional development experience in higher education. • Previous individual, corporate, and foundation discovery experience. • Experience working with volunteers. • Knowledge of the integrated advancement model. Knowledge of alumni relations/development/advancement principles. • Knowledge of UW Advancement policies and procedures, including use of the development database software Tandem.

Work Environment • Ability to work evening and weekend hours, as necessary, on short or limited notice. • Must have regular and reliable transportation for local travel and willing to travel when necessary. • During Events (from setup to tear down) or on Event days: • Ability to lift 20 pounds regularly and up to 40 pounds occasionally for event setup and tear down. • Ability to stand 4 or more hours continuously. • Ability to walk 4 or more hours continuously. • Ability to work greater than a 10 hour day
