Amazon Data Engineer II, Litigation & Regulatory in Seattle, Washington

The Litigation & Regulatory team works with senior management to produce evidence and data to support legal and regulatory matters, across all lines of our business, including retail, marketplace services, AWS, consumer experience, shopping and search, and operations, and across all of our businesses worldwide. In this role, you will join a team of economists, lawyers, and engineers focused on some of the largest challenges facing Amazon today.

As a Data Engineer you will build new database solutions end-to-end, with opportunities to utilize data and develop new ways to answer a wide variety of questions. You will work with multiple stakeholders within and outside Amazon Legal to integrate data sources and create data infrastructures that can be used by advanced statistical and ML models. The successful candidate will be a self-starter comfortable with ambiguity, have a strong attention to detail, an ability to work in a fast-paced environment, and be driven by a desire to innovate in this space.

The position is based either in Arlington, VA or Seattle, WA.

Key job responsibilities

  • Interface with teams across the company to identify and analyze the right source of data to respond to variety of high-impact issues and conduct deep dive analyses of business problems and formulate conclusions and recommendations to be presented to senior leadership

  • Understand a broad range of Amazon’s data resources and know how, when, and which to use and which not to use with advanced analytical techniques to solve business problems. Write high quality code to retrieve and analyze data

  • Design, implement and support a scalable and reliable infrastructure for Data Warehousing, BI and Analysis to extract data using scalable and optimized techniques

  • Model data and metadata to support a variety of requests in litigation and regulatory matters.

  • Own the design, development, and maintenance of ongoing metrics, reports, analyses, dashboards, etc. to raise the bar on analytics within legal.

  • Recognize and adopt best practices in reporting and analysis: data integrity, test design, analysis, validation, and documentation.

  • Learn and understand a broad range of Amazon’s data resources and know when, how, and which to use.

  • Continually improve ongoing reporting and analysis processes, automating or creating self-service options.

  • Synthesize and translate complex findings into relevant and actionable insights

Basic Qualifications

  • 3+ years of data engineering experience

  • Experience with data modeling, warehousing and building ETL pipelines

  • Experience with big data technologies such as: Hadoop, Hive, Spark, EMR

  • Experience with SQL

  • Experience working on and delivering end to end projects independently

  • Experience as a Data Engineer or in a similar role

  • Experience providing technical leadership and mentoring other engineers for best practices on data engineering

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with AWS technologies like Redshift, S3, AWS Glue, EMR, Kinesis, FireHose, Lambda, and IAM roles and permissions

  • Experience with non-relational databases / data stores (object storage, document or key-value stores, graph databases, column-family databases)

  • Experience in at least one modern scripting or programming language, such as Python, Java, Scala, or NodeJS

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $118,900/year in our lowest geographic market up to $205,600/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
