Responsibilities
PNNL is globally recognized as a leader in artificial intelligence (AI) research and development. The AI and Data Analytics Division is looking for a Group Leader to manage our Software Engineering and Architecture (SEA) capability. Our SEA Group is a trailblazer in designing and delivering bespoke, cutting-edge AI engineering and data analytics capabilities. This group thrives in high-cadence settings, crafting custom solutions for mission-critical challenges.
We are on the lookout for a visionary Group Leader to spearhead our Software Engineering and Architecture (SEA) capability leading a staff of 80 people. This role is perfect for someone who thrives on innovation and is passionate about the national security mission and creating high performing teams. As the Group Leader, you will cultivate a people-focused leadership style, embodying our values while steering the group towards success. You will serve as a research line manager with significant span of control and/or delegated authority and responsibility. Your decisions impact objectives, goals and long-term success of the group and division.
Key responsibilities include:
Leadership Excellence: Lead a vibrant team of 80+ engineers primarily located in Richland and Seattle, WA.
Strategic Vision: Working with the division direction and other group leaders, develop and execute a vision and strategy for applied and operational data science, data analytics and data engineering ensuring alignment with broader PNNL goals. Build a robust foundation in the group that will enable significant growth over the coming years.
Collaboration and Growth: Collaborate closely with the data science and human centered computing groups to create a vision for delivering operational AI, data analytics and data science solutions to our sponsors. The SEA group provides the engineering, rigor and creativity needed to operational our AI capabilities and develop state-of-the-art frameworks to drive our data analytics portfolio.
Mentorship: Guide the next generation of leaders, providing clear, direct feedback and fostering growth opportunities. Define and nurture the applied and operational data science discipline in support of our National Security Directorate sponsors to build an impactful capability focused on mission-driven impact and rigorous data science principles.
Communication and Advocacy: Serve as and be the interface for NSD sponsors on our engineering capability. Create and deliver impactful briefings that illustrate PNNL’s leadership in Applied AI that result in increased visibility.
Foster One Team Concept: Work closely with AIDA senior leadership to creating an environment of one team among the staff with focus on engineering.
AIDA Stewardship: Contribute to division strategy objectives as a member of the Al and Data Analytics Division leadership team.
Resource Management: Administer overhead budgets and staff development resources to ensure expertise, facilities and equipment are mission-ready.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
BS/BA and 10 years work experience -OR-
MS/MA or higher and 8 years of experience
Preferred Qualifications:
Technical degree in computer science, computer engineering, data science or related field.
Supervisory or line management experience of technical staff.
Experience stewarding technical capabilities.
Experience with NSD sponsor mission.
Experience managing AI related engineering capabilities.
Strong connections with leaders in National Security and/or industry communities.
Proven experience in securing project funding and managing budgets.
Proven leadership experience in managing staff and building high performance teams.
Strong interpersonal and leadership skills and a passion for nurturing and developing emerging talent.

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a federal security clearance.

U.S. Citizenship
Background Investigation: Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter in accordance with 10 CFR 710, Appendix B.
Drug Testing: All Security Clearance positions are Testing Designated Positions, which means that the candidate selected is subject to pre-employment and random drug testing. In addition, applicants must be able to demonstrate non-use of illegal drugs, including marijuana, for the 12 consecutive months preceding completion of the requisite Questionnaire for National Security Positions (QNSP).
Note: Applicants will be considered ineligible for security clearance processing by the U.S. Department of Energy until non-use of illegal drugs, including marijuana, for 12 months can be demonstrated.
Testing Designated Position
This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP). The candidate selected for this position will be subject to pre-employment and random drug testing for illegal drugs, including marijuana, consistent with the Controlled Substances Act and the PNNL Workplace Substance Abuse Program.

In accordance with Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12) and Department of Energy (DOE) Order 473.1A, new employees are required to obtain and maintain a HSPD-12 Personal Identity Verification (PIV) Credential. To obtain this credential, new employees must successfully complete and pass a Federal Tier 1 background check investigation. This investigation includes a declaration of illegal drug activities, including use, supply, possession, or manufacture within the last year. This includes marijuana and cannabis derivatives, which are still considered illegal under federal law, regardless of state laws.

Starting pay is calculated from the minimum of the pay range and actual placement in the range is determined based on an individual’s relevant job-related skills, qualifications, and experience.
