Hoffman Construction Company Intern Mechanical Estimator in Seattle, Washington

JOB DESCRIPTION

POSITION SUMMARY: The Mechanical Estimating Intern will assist the project team and estimating department in the following areas: Reviewing project 3D models, plans and specifications for the purpose of quantifying project elements such as mechanical, plumbing, and process equipment, fixtures, piping, ductwork, and appurtenances. Use Generated quantities to create a mechanical project budget in collaborating with project superintendents and project managers to adjust costing data to current best practices. This position is on site and 40 hours a week for a minimum of 10 weeks over Summer 2025.

Hourly Rate: $24-$30 depending on experience.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Download documents and 3D Building Information Models.

  • Read and interpret design, construction drawings, specifications, and technical manuals.

  • Write and publish meeting minutes, schedule graphs, and activity checklists.

  • Generate, receive, and distribute requests for information (RFI).

  • Receive and distribute change documents issued by other team members.

  • Compare and quantify addendums.

  • Tally construction elements and summarize quantities in Excel and other estimating software.

  • Create scope letters.

Qualifications:

Position Related Skills

  • Experience in Windows and Microsoft Office 365 (Excel, Word, Outlook, Power Point and Teams), and have a general understanding of working within a computer network.

  • Experience with construction software such Bluebeam and Navisworks.

  • Basic experience in design and construction document reading, design specifications, survey theory and techniques.

  • Excellent time-management skills.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with an ability to develop strong interpersonal relationships.

  • Experience in organizing technical data in a neat and accurate method. Basic familiarity with CSI specification system for construction.

Professional Experience and Education

  • High School diploma or GED required.

  • Proficient in Algebra I and Geometry.

  • Pursuing a bachelor’s degree or Technology certificate in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Construction Management, or equivalent degree and/or equivalent field work experience preferred.

Physical and Mental Requirements:

  • Workday is a combination of being stationary and moving about the work location. Must be able to spend equal amounts of time in a stationary position in an office environment and moving about the construction site.

  • Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer.

  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus in an outdoor environment. The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; reading printed and digital documents.

  • Must use independent judgment, and organizational and problem-solving skills to determine best method to accomplish desired results. 

  • Ability to communicate conversationally and professionally in English; verbally, written and in reading comprehension.
