The School of Pharmacy’s Office of the Dean has an outstanding opportunity for a Laboratory Safety Coordinator. The Laboratory Safety Coordinator is a leadership position reporting to the Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Programs and holds primary responsibility for oversight of the SOP laboratory safety and environmental compliance efforts and serves as liaison with the University’s Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) unit in maintaining safety monitoring, compliance, and response activities for all SOP laboratory facilities. The Coordinator works independently of the Associate Dean in carrying out these duties to strengthen the SOP research infrastructure. The Coordinator works collaboratively within and beyond SOP to maintain safety monitoring, compliance, and response activities for all SOP laboratory facilities.

Operations (40%):

  • Manage the documentation and personnel training of shared laboratory spaces and equipment to ensure compliance with mandatory health and safety trainings.

  • Conduct monitoring and periodic audits of health and safety programs for compliance.

  • Support, assess and maintain adequate personal protective equipment (PPE) for laboratory operations and provide guidance in specific requirements.

  • Participate on behalf of SOP on laboratory safety inspections and support addressing deficiencies.

  • Develop protocols and processes for schoolwide safety procedures to ensure streamlined sharing of information.

  • Support new faculty in laboratory setup providing guidance on development of appropriate lab safety management protocols, biological use authorizations (BUA), and chemical storage and waste management protocols.

  • Assist in laboratory closeouts and decontamination of used equipment.

  • Assist in facilities development and communications with UW facilities to address deficiencies in SOP lab spaces identified as part of annual safety inspections Safety training (30%):

  • Advice principal investigators (PIs) on required EH&S trainings and new training modules for specific laboratory needs.

  • Provide new students, volunteers, staff, and trainees with safety orientations to the SOP and its laboratories.

  • Determine if general and laboratory-specific trainings have been completed and documented in laboratory specific training records for each laboratory member

  • Serve as a liaison between UW SOP and EH&S to clarify UW policies and protocols,

  • Advise faculty and lab managers on new policies and changes in safety practices as new information becomes available

  • Develop a system for routine review of compliance with lab safety trainings so that all lab members and PIs are current.

  • Attend EH&S annual supervisor trainings for lab safety and disseminate information to the SOP community. Documentation of laboratory standard operating procedures (SOPs) and required Laboratory Risk Assessment Tool (Lab RAT) for protocols and procedures (15%):

  • Support PIs in hazard assessment and development of SOPs for chemicals and protocols with special emphasis on particularly hazardous chemicals.

  • Assess the if each lab has the required documentation: Chemical procedures and SOPs, and Risk assessment documentation for procedures (Lab RAT).

  • Work with the laboratory members to create and/or update necessary documentation.

  • Develop a system for routine review and updating of procedures and SOPs.

  • Act as a Chemical Hygiene Officer for BPLC PCEUT 531 laboratories. Chemical (Waste) Management (10%):

  • Support PIs and laboratory managers in developing adequate waste management procedures.

  • Review MyChem inventories for SOP spaces and train lab personnel in MyChem practices.

  • Work with lab members to identify chemicals that should be disposed of.

  • Appropriately dispose of chemicals that are no longer needed.

  • Develop a system for routine review and disposal of chemical waste.

  • Determine if remaining chemicals are stored adequately.

  • Manage waste storage. SOP Liaison (5%):

  • Serve as the SOP liaison with EH&S to resolve issues and address needs for physical facilities and coordinate post-EHS inspection response.

  • Work with EH&S to determine the best safety practices and procedures.

  • Serve on institutional safety committee(s) as assigned MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree in occupational safety or relevant scientific field

  • Two years of work experience in an academic or public sector agency laboratory or equivalent education/experienceEquivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Working knowledge of UW EH&S policies and procedures.

  • Knowledge of applicable state laws, regulations, codes and guidelines related to laboratory safety.

  • Degree in environmental health and safety, chemistry or biology or related field.
