Blue Origin LLC Materials & Process Engineer Senior - New Shepard in Seattle, Washington

New Shepard is a reusable suborbital rocket system designed to take astronauts and research payloads past the Karman line - the internationally recognized boundary of space. Through operational reusability, New Shepard supports our mission of lowering the cost of access to space. As part of a hardworking team of diverse engineers, you will tackle existing material problems for various spaceflight systems. You will share in the team's impact on all aspects of New Shepard. You will review production drawings for large complex assemblies, develop processes, select materials, help implement a New Shepard Parts, Materials and Processes Plan and define design requirements. We work closely with quality, design, structures, thermal, integration and manufacturing to optimize designs and processes. Your broad experience in materials & processes support for metallic (e.g. forging, casting, forming, extrusion, plating, corrosion, coating, brazing, anodization, welding, passivation) and non-metallic (e.g. o-rings, seals, lubricants) hardware will be impactful to the team as we refine processes and engineering designs. You will work with the New Shepard Materials and Processes Engineering Manager and work with them to increase program support. Qualifications: B.S. degree or higher in welding engineering, materials engineering, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering or related field. 7+ years' experience - note, level of position will be commensurate with candidate experience, capabilities, and skillset (level 3, Senior, or Principal) Ability to learn, grow and tackle new challenges in a fast paced environment. Excellent attention to detail and task ownership, someone who demonstrates pride in all work and willingness to perform low-level tasks when needed. Strong interpersonal and organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and handle small and large projects with a diversity of internal and external customers. Experience with at least one of the following processes: Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW), Orbital Tube Welding (OTW), Laser Beam Welding (LBW), Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM), and Brazing. Proven experience developing and executing test plans for analysis and qualification of welding/joining processes. Experience with implementing welding automation and/or mechanization. Familiarity with standard methods of manufacturing, such as machining and inspections. Experience interpreting NDT/NDE results (such as UT, RT, PT). Broad materials & processes support for metallic (e.g. forging, casting, forming, extrusion, plating, coating, brazing, anodization, passivation) hardware. Strong written and personal computer skills. Knowledgeable in Aluminum, Titanium, corrosion, Fusion Welding or metallic materials. Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion.
