The Department of Finance & Administration has an outstanding opportunity for a Senior Director of Facilities Asset Management to join their team.

Reporting to the Vice Chancellor for Finance & Administration (VCFA), the Senior Director of Facilities Asset Management oversees planning and project delivery within UW Tacoma Facilities with a focus on ?transformational leadership. This role collaborates and integrates with UW campuses in Bothell and Seattle to enhance planning, design, project delivery, operations, and sustainability across UW assets. The Senior Director manages a team of professionals to deliver innovative solutions, balancing lifecycle costs, fiscal responsibility, design excellence, and the strategic priorities of UW Tacoma (UWT). This role oversees the entire asset management process, from the identification of space needs through design, construction, project handover, and the transition to occupancy and maintenance.

UW Tacoma is one of the fastest-growing institutions in Washington, occupying over 900,000 square feet across a 15-acre campus footprint within a downtown urban setting. This position will work jointly with the Director of Facilities Operations to provide oversight for the overall physical environment of the campus, and will provide leadership and guidance for balancing and managing facilities needs as the campus grows. Strong analytical skills are required to interpret complex regulations and policies, resolve engineering and architectural challenges, and make data-driven decisions to support the strategic priorities of the campus. This position works with minimal supervision, has multiple deadlines from internal and external sources and must assess priorities and complete work in a timely manner.

This position must work in a new and changing environment in conjunction with the VCFA to provide leadership for the creation of new policies and procedures for management and academic leaders at both the campus level and within the structure of the University at large. This position supports a culture of continuous improvement, customer service, and accountability. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES FACILITIES ASSET MANAGEMENT (65%)

  • Oversee all project design and construction management activities, ensuring alignment with UWT’s urban and historical character while promoting sustainability.

  • Develop and implement a Strategic Asset Management Plan focused on asset optimization and reliability.

  • Mature the asset portfolio management model, focusing on optimizing lifecycle performance and ensuring stewardship of UWT’s physical assets.

  • Establish project-specific guidelines and facilities design standards to ensure consistency and quality in project outcomes.

  • Provide strategic direction, advocacy, and foresight in assessing risks related to campus and building portfolios.

  • Foster relationships with internal and external stakeholders, maximizing value in the selection of contractors and consultants.

  • Promote life-cycle perspectives in capital program planning, budgeting, and decision-making, ensuring alignment with sustainability goals and state requirements.

  • Develop and refine project budgeting and scheduling methodologies, incorporating data accuracy for informed decision-making, including space utilization tracking.

  • Provide leadership in asset management to enhance the performance and service orientation of the Facilities team.LEADERSHIP, POLICIES & PROCEDURES, COMMUNICATIONS & RELATIONS (30%)

  • Provide inclusive, strategic leadership and manage the professional development and performance of the UWT Facilities and Asset Management staff.

  • Cultivate relationships with academic, administrative leadership, and external agencies to support capital project delivery.

  • Lead cross-departmental collaboration for planning, maintenance, and support of UWT facilities.

  • Serve as a key member of the Finance & Administration Leadership Team, contributing to committee work and governance.

  • Develop transparent communication protocols with UW leadership, stakeholders, and community partners.

  • Provide expert guidance on capital budgeting, occupancy, and facilities operations.

  • Lead efforts to improve the performance of the Facilities organization, ensuring it operates efficiently and addresses the needs of a growing campus.

  • Collaborate with Facilities Operations to enhance preventative maintenance, reducing reactive approaches in line with UWT’s Portfolio Management Strategy.

  • Promote UW Tacoma’s commitment to sustainability, reducing energy consumption and environmental impact. Lead projects and metrics related to carbon reduction, sustainability reporting, and the Sustainability Action Plan.TEAMWORK (5%)

  • May be asked to serve as a substitute for the Vice Chancellor for Finance & Administration in their absence for all matters in Finance & Administration.

  • In the event that the campus may be faced with an institutional emergency, this position may be required to remain at their work location or report to work to protect, recover, and continue operations at the campus.

  • Serves on national and statewide committees as necessary and/or required. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Architecture, Planning or a related field, and a minimum of eight years of experience in planning, design management and capital improvement programming. Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Proven ability to manage large, complex facilities projects, with a collaborative and efficient planning process.

  • Strong knowledge of facility operations, engineering, and architectural systems with a commitment to sustainability.

  • Strong interpersonal skills, experience collaborating with diverse teams and stakeholders.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Excellent organizational skills in identifying and prioritizing work activities; ability to work on multiple and concurrent projects.

  • Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree in engineering, architecture, or business.

  • Experience in financial planning, facilities maintenance, and operations.

  • Familiarity with strategic management principles, LEED certification, and asset management standards, such as ISO 55000.

  • Five or more years of management experience in public higher education/research institutions.

  • Familiarity with the complexities of the University of Washington systems. The successful candidate will:
