Amazon Software Development Manager - Amazon Linux, Amazon Linux in Seattle, Washington

Description

Amazon is looking to hire an experienced engineering leader to manage and grow a team working on operating system distribution. You will own a highly scaled web service fundamental for releasing updates to Amazon Linux customers. As an SDM, you will own key parts of the software stack that is running on most Amazon servers worldwide, guiding a team of engineers collaborating with internal teams and the Open Source community.

Key job responsibilities

As a Software Development Manager within EC2, you will lead a team of highly skilled developers and therefore have strategic impact on the business. Our roadmap is bursting with opportunity for you to lead this team in solving intriguing challenges and tangibly impacting the customer experience. This role does involve key aspects of owning our OS release infrastructure. In this role you will also be responsible for developing and maintaining components of Amazon Linux, such Tomcat, R, and Printing packages. If you have passion for people management, solid technical knowledge and want to build solutions to challenging problems that directly affect millions of people, there may be no better place than Amazon for you to impact the world! You will manage your team to execute against project plans and delivery commitments. You will translate customer requirements into project and engineering plans, and ambitious but realistic schedules. You represent your team in calls and meetings to report on progress and update project plans if required. Long term you evolve your team’s software engineering methods and implement best practices. Ultimately you contribute to the organization’s hiring to grow your team and others.

A day in the life

A typical day will have 1:1 meetings with team members to review and discuss their work, priorities, and professional development. You will also have meetings with other leaders in the organization, initially for your own education, and later to discuss current and future projects. For planning and technical designs, you will write, read or review narrative documents and iterate on them. If you are hiring, you will be review profiles and conducing interviews.

About the team

The work of building and maintaining Amazon Linux includes upstream collaboration, bug and security fixes, and package updates. You will have many stakeholders both inside the organization, and across Amazon.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree

  • 3+ years of engineering team management experience

  • 8+ years of engineering experience

  • Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operations

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $166,400/year in our lowest geographic market up to $287,700/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company. Dependent on the position offered, equity, sign-on payments, and other forms of compensation may be provided as part of a total compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits.
