The AWS Hardware Engineering team is driving rapid innovation in the server and storage infrastructure used by Amazon Web Services. We are looking for an experienced Software Development Manager to build and operate next generation storage solution development for AWS world scale compute and storage solutions. The ideal candidate for this role will be an innovative, hands-on leader seasoned in building and leading software teams developing large-scale telemetry and real-time monitoring systems with demonstrated experience at building solutions using AWS public cloud services.

As a manager in this team, you will be leading a team of highly motivated software developers that thrive on solving challenging problems with innovative solutions. The team couples software and firmware skill-sets with storage and scalable software engineering disciplines to solve real world data storage problems. You would lead a team building, validating, and operating software solutions in diverse technology domains from embedded software platforms to large-scale distributed software systems in C/C++, Python, and other languages using proprietary and open source technologies and Amazon services alike. You are highly organized, data-driven, have a passion for recruiting, leading and developing world-class engineering talent, and executing projects on aggressive timelines.

You will collaborate with internal and external development teams (architecture, hardware, validation, software services). You will establish strategic vision and drive tactical execution in defining and delivering new products and services. What you will do: You will build and lead a team building large-scale monitoring and real-time telemetry systems for operating an at-scale storage platform, including designing and building automation, tooling and data analytics solutions. You will build and operate scalable storage solutions and associated operational infrastructure to automate monitoring and analysis services. You will work closely with other AWS software teams to tailor and operate storage solutions for the AWS environment.

About the team

Nitro SSD is an AWS strategic initiative to improve customer experience by increasing storage availability, reducing SSD related operations, improving device security, and enabling uniform customer experience with transparent multi-sourcing of NAND. We achieve this through software and hardware design ownership, while multi-sourcing NAND from memory suppliers. Nitro SSD brings differentiated features, such as Torn-Write-Prevention, that drive customer value, reducing their infrastructure spend, while improving performance for their database workloads as an example.

Basic Qualifications

  • 3+ years of engineering team management experience

  • 7+ years of working directly within engineering teams experience

  • 3+ years of designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience

  • 8+ years of leading the definition and development of multi tier web services experience

  • Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operations

  • Experience partnering with product or program management teams

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior leadership to collect requirements, describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy

  • Experience in recruiting, hiring, mentoring/coaching and managing teams of Software Engineers to improve their skills, and make them more effective, product software engineers

  • Demonstrated experience with monitoring and operating a large-scale IoT and/or devices/sensors fleet is a definite strength

  • Demonstrated experience building and operating at scale service for monitoring and telemetry using Cloudwatch, Kinesis, DynamoDB, ECS, EKS and Fargate

  • Demonstrated experience building automation systems including rule-engines, analytics and knowledge extraction from real-time data streams

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $166,400/year in our lowest geographic market up to $287,700/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
