UW Medical Center-Montlake – Otolaryngology Head & Neck Surgery Clinic has an outstanding opportunity for a SPEECH LANGUAGE PATHOLOGIST 2. WORK SCHEDULE - FULL-TIME; 1.0 FTE; 40 HOURS/WEEK - Day Shift

POSITION HIGHLIGHTS For this position, we are seeking an experienced speech pathologist to act as the head and neck cancer program lead in order to manage and coordinate all aspects of this specialized program and provide leadership within the Otolaryngology department. Competitive candidates will bring experience in working with adults presenting with dysphagia of all etiologies, with an emphasis on head and neck cancer, as well as performing videofluoroscopic swallow evaluations and flexible endoscopic evaluations of swallowing and providing swallowing therapy. Special consideration will also be given to candidates with experience working in a multidisciplinary clinic, total laryngectomy management, acute inpatient head and neck cancer rehabilitation, and/or high-resolution pharyngeal manometry. DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION UW Medicine - Department of Otolaryngology/Head & Neck Surgery features a vibrant clinical practice blending 13 speech-language pathologists (including a clinical fellow) with 6 full-time laryngologists, 3 full-time head and neck surgeons, and laryngology and head and neck fellows. Our speech-language pathologists are specialized in voice, swallowing and upper airway disorders with expertise including performing voice, neurogenic voice, gender affirming voice, facial rehabilitation, chronic cough, dynamic airway disorders, complex swallowing disorders, head and neck cancer management and alaryngeal rehabilitation. Our team is involved in local and national community outreach, clinical education and collaborative research with other speech pathologists and/or physicians.

PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES Oversees a specialized program within the Otolaryngology Speech-Language Pathology Department: Act as clinical practice expert to train Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) in appropriate use and recommendation of program specific protocols and equipment. Develop and maintain program training competencies. Make recommendations for equipment and product ordering associated with program and manage appropriate labeling, storage, and organization of equipment and products. Work with equipment vendors and technical support staff as needed to troubleshoot and determine need for repair. Train SLPs on appropriate documentation and billing standards as it related to specialty program, including clinical note support, documentation review, and documentation co-signature as indicated by SLP progress within program competency. Provide program education and be the liaison to other UW Medicine departments and community providers/partners regarding specialty program. Develop and maintain program development and such as inter- & intra-departmental education material, up-to-date literature reviews, and written guidelines for equipment use, maintenance, and troubleshooting. In collaboration with SLP supervisor or manager, identify barriers and challenges to specialty program management and formulate plan for addressing barriers. In collaboration with supervisor or manager, develop and maintain program policies & procedures and infection control standards.

Direct Patient Care: Independently, plans, directs and administers Speech Language Pathology evaluation and intervention to patients throughout the medical center. Assesses and treats a patient caseload ranging from routine to complex patient problems utilizing training in the evaluation and treatment process. Under general direction, coordinates and provides leadership within practice of speech language pathology, responsible for managing, assessing and directing clinical activities within the Otolaryngology department in accordance with patient needs. Assists patients to reach their maximum performance and function. Collaborates with other disciplines as appropriate to coordinate continuity of patient care from admission to discharge. Acts as a resource within the Otolaryngology department. In collaboration with supervisor or manager, coordinates development of selected department activities/projects to promote delivery of quality speech therapy care. Assists and/or leads other staff in program development and quality improvement tasks. Assists in annual observations and assists in competency assessment of assigned clinical staff. Assists and/or leads to develop clinical programs for optimum patient care and service. Participates in operational aspects, performance improvement, and Quality Improvement activities within the department. Provides input in formulating budget, assists in evaluation of departmental performance, and takes action to remain in budget guidelines. Ensures that patient charges and documentation are accurate and entered on a timely basis. Supervises students, volunteers, and office assistants. Participates in infection control, equipment training, compliance, safety and educational programs, both at the departmental and organization level.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS - Licensed by the State of Washington as a Speech Language Pathologist. - A Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology/Audiology or Communicative Disorders. OR Documentation of American Speech-Language-Hearing Association approved equivalent to the Master’s degree consisting of approved curriculum and student practicum hours. AND A Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. - OR Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification or registration.

Desirable Qualifications At least three years of experience as a speech pathologist or equivalent is preferred. Experience/competencies in managing dysphagia (particularly within a multidisciplinary outpatient head and neck and/or laryngology clinic) and total laryngectomy populations Experience/competencies in adult medical speech pathology, particularly working within a multidisciplinary outpatient clinic. Experience with performance of clinical evaluation and treatment of patients with voice, resonance, upper airway, and/or swallowing disorders. Experience in performing rigid and flexible videostroboscopy, flexible endoscopic evaluation of swallowing, and/or videofluoroscopic swallow evaluation.
