Jamestown Healing Clinic JHC Per-Diem Dental Hygienist in Sequim, Washington

The Jamestown Healing Clinic is seeking a compassionate, patient-centered Dental Hygienist for a per-diem position. This role provides essential oral healthcare services with a focus on individuals affected by substance use disorders. The Dental Hygienist will integrate trauma-informed care and harm reduction principles to create a supportive, non-judgmental environment for all patients. This position is for at least one day per month (6:00 AM - 2:00 PM) with the possibility of additional shifts based on clinic needs. The Dental Hygienist plays a key role in preventive dental care, oral health education, and promoting overall health in line with the health standards of the Clinic.

Essential Responsibilities:

Clinical Duties:

  • Examine patients' oral cavities, including the mouth, throat, and pharynx, documenting conditions and identifying abnormalities.
  • Perform oral prophylaxis procedures, including scaling (supragingival and subgingival), polishing, and applying fluoride and sealants.
  • Take, expose, and interpret dental radiographs (bitewings, panoramic, and periapical) to diagnose oral health conditions.
  • Administer local anesthesia and desensitizing agents as necessary.
  • Instruct and demonstrate proper oral hygiene techniques and care to patients using educational tools and materials.
  • Maintain sterilization and infection control procedures in line with Clinic policies.
  • Educate patients on the effects of substance use on oral health and offer harm reduction strategies.

Trauma-Informed Care & Harm Reduction:

  • Apply a trauma-informed approach during patient interactions, recognizing the impact of past trauma on current health behaviors and needs.
  • Tailor communication and treatment plans to be sensitive to the unique experiences of each patient.

Patient Education & Support:

  • Offer individualized patient education on oral hygiene, dental disease prevention, and managing oral health challenges related to substance use.
  • Address patient concerns with empathy, providing referrals for additional healthcare services when necessary.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Maintain patient confidentiality and adhere to HIPAA standards.
  • Follow all Jamestown Healing Clinic policies and procedures, including safety protocols.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Current Washington State Dental Hygienist License.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) and First Aid certification for Healthcare providers.
  • 15 hours of continuing education annually.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of dental anatomy, hygiene techniques, and preventive dentistry practices.
  • Ability to effectively treat periodontally involved patients and perform dental prophylactic procedures.
  • Proficient in basic computer skills and ability to learn dental office software.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel locally and regionally as needed.

Preferred:

  • Experience working with patients impacted by substance use disorders.
  • Training or experience in trauma-informed care.
  • Knowledge of harm reduction practices.
  • American Indian/Alaska Native preferences apply.
