National Audubon Society Senior Center Assistant in Sharon, Connecticut

Position Summary:

The Sharon Audubon Centers mission is to protect birds and the places they live. The Centers Sanctuary lands comprise nearly 2,000 acres of forest, wetlands, fields, gardens, and grounds, managed primarily to provide habitat for birds. An additional objective of the Center is to provide a safe, welcoming, and accessible experience for people of all ages and backgrounds who arrive in our Visitor Center or use our trails.

The Senior Center Assistant will provide excellent facility support and visitor services on weekends, encouraging visitors to connect with the Centers mission and programs. The position is located in Sharon, CT and reports to the Center Director. This is a part-time position of 8 to 10 hours per week, scheduled between 12:00 and 5:00 on Saturday and Sunday. Total hours per day may vary.

Compensation:

$17.00 - $18.00 / hour Essential Functions

  • Serve as the first point of contact for people visiting the Center to ensure a warm and welcoming experience, answer questions and forward queries and requests to staff as needed.

  • Staff the greeting station and ring up sales in the Nature Store.

  • With the Volunteer Coordinator, interact with Visitor Center or Program volunteers.

  • With Wildlife Rehab Clinic volunteers, assist with intake of patients to the Centers clinic.

  • Assist as needed with preparing and presenting weekend events and programs.

  • Maintain cleanliness of work area, Nature Store, public restrooms, and exhibit room each day.

  • Assist as needed with care of live animals in exhibit room as needed.

  • Ensure that maps, brochures, flyers, and other information for visitors are stocked in the Center and in trail kiosks.

  • Clerical help as requested, e.g. data entry, photocopying.

  • Other job-related duties as assigned.

  • Qualifications and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent (Associate or Bachelors degree in a natural science field is a plus), 1-2 years' experience in a nature center or other visitor facility, some experience with animal care. Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.

  • Ability to represent a national non-profit conservation organization in a professional manner.

  • Exceptional organizational skills, attention to detail and a can-do attitude.

  • Ability to communicate with a wide variety of people and provide outstanding customer service.

  • Ability to track and move tasks/projects to completion.

  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a small team.

  • Ability to exercise discretion and maintain strict confidentiality.

  • Ability to think critically and solve problems.

  • Must be able to lift 20 lbs. with or without accommodation.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products such as Outlook, Word and Excel.
