SHERMAN - CITY OF Laboratory Technician in Sherman, Texas
The Laboratory Technician is responsible for preparing samples, performing basic laboratory test procedures, calibrating, operating and maintaining equipment, making observations, taking measurements and interpreting and recording test results for the analysis of water and wastewater samples. This position will also provide support for other laboratory positions.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
- Analyzes water and wastewater samples using established and approved methodologies.
- Follows established standard operating procedures and quality control criteria to ensure test accuracy and data quality.
- Performs necessary calculations to report test data and quality control results.
- Maintains daily records of test results and quality control data.
- Performs QA/QC duties to support other laboratory positions.
- Enters reportable data into spreadsheets, databases or other computer generated programs.
- Performs daily peer reviews of test results and quality control data for other laboratory positions.
- Performs general activities such as cleaning work areas, washing glassware and preparing solutions.
- Stocks supplies and reagents to maintain adequate inventory and providing support for purchasing activities.
- Performs routine maintenance on laboratory equipment.
- Performs additional duties as assigned by management or identified in the laboratory's quality assurance plan.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of
- Analytical techniques, scientific theory, test method requirements and instrumentation used in standard laboratory procedures.
- EPA approved water and wastewater laboratory procedures, including sample collection and preservation techniques.

- Set up and perform basic mathematical calculations and gather/interpret scientific data.
- Communicate clearly and concisely in English both orally and in writing.
- Establish and maintain effective and harmonious working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, management, customers and the public.
- Safely and effectively operate and maintain laboratory equipment, computer systems and peripheral equipment necessary to perform essential job functions.
- Push, pull, lift and carry a minimum of 50 lbs without assistance.
- Must be able to stand and/or sit for extended periods of time while performing tests.
- Perform repetitive tasks requiring constant attention to detail.
- Pass recurring proficiency testing as required by applicable standards.
- Conform to requirements of the laboratory's quality assurance plan, data integrity and ethics policy, confidentiality agreement and other standard operating procedures.
- Work weekends, holidays and on-call as required.
Experience and Education
:
Any combination equivalent to the level of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities will qualify.
Experience:
- One year of water/wastewater laboratory or wastewater plant operations experience is preferred.
Education:
- High School Diploma or GED required. Coursework in chemistry, biology and math is preferred.
- Associates degree in environmental science or related field is preferred.
Licenses:
- Possession of a valid Class C Motor Vehicle Operator's License.
- Possession of a valid Class C Wastewater Operator's license is preferred
ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS
The duties of this position are performed indoors in a laboratory environment, and in a professional office setting. The incumbent can reasonably expect to be exposed to trip hazards, various hazardous substances including those classified as biohazards. Incumbents will be required to use both normal and specialized protective equipment in carrying out their assigned duties.
