Description:
The Patient Safety Officer (PSO) has the responsibility and accountability for the oversight and strategic direction of the patient safety program for Holy Cross Health. This role will lead others within the facilities towards process improvements and risk identification/reduction that will support the reduction of medical/health care errors and other factors that contribute to unintended adverse patient outcomes. Reporting to the Director Risk Management Patient Safety, this practitioner provides safety assessments, educates other practitioners and is actively involved in all aspects of the Risk Management Patient Safety Department. The PSO develops strategic and operational plans that build upon the present patient safety program to assure patient safety practices are evidence based and align with organizational goals. The PSO assists the Director Risk Management Patient Safety in the management of insurance programs and loss control activities; implementing approved programs; promoting loss prevention; and ensures necessary and timely updates to safety/risk management policies and procedures.

Minimum licensure/certification required (if applicable):
Current licensure by the Maryland State Board of Nursing as a Registered Nurse preferred
Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk management (CPHRM) or Certified Professional in Patient Safety (CPPS) certification on hire or within 6 months of hire required
BLS certified preferred
Minimum Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Required:
Registered Nurse with current Maryland license preferred, Master of Science Degree in a healthcare or related field preferred.
Minimum of 5 years of direct patient care experience required.
Minimum 3 years healthcare risk management/quality improvement or patient safety experience preferred.
Minimum 2 years management/supervisory experience preferred.
Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk Management (CPHRM) or Certified Professional in Patient Safety (CPPS) required at hire or within six months of hire (if CPHRM certified at hire, would expect CPPS completion within first year).
Experience with program development and change management.
Strong analytical and writing ability. Must be a skilled communicator/presenter and have the ability to influence leadership and practitioners at all levels within the organization.
Ability to demonstrate technical skills in collecting, analyzing, and presenting information. Ability to employ data-oriented software (e.g. Word, Excel, Powerpoint, STARS).
Effectively reads, writes, speaks and comprehends the English language.
Reporting Relationship:
Reports to the Director, Risk Management/Patient Safety.
