As a Scientist working in this area, one applies an earth sciences background in conjunction with Geographic Information System (GIS) software, scripting techniques (Python), statistics, data mining, and/or modeling methodology to produce, manipulate, analyze, and interpret geospatial datasets that contribute to the successful production of a high-quality elevation dataset.

Position Summary: Studies principles of plant and animal life such as origin, relationship, development, anatomy, and function; collects and analyzes biological data between organisms and their environment. Conducts data analysis, prepares technical and research reports, and communicates results. Provides technical research support by participating in data collection, monitoring testing, and analyzing the data. Evaluates equipment for safety and performance. Conducts assignments that require the determination and evaluation of alternative procedures and the sequence of performing them. Plan, schedule, conduct and coordinate detailed research projects and participate in the development of research proposals. Includes areas such as biology, biotechnology, microbiology, animal sciences, radiobiology, etc. Requires knowledge and experience in own discipline; still acquiring higher-level knowledge and skills. Builds knowledge of Group, its processes, and customers. Solves a range of straightforward problems. Analyzes possible solutions using standard procedures. Receives a moderate level of guidance and direction. Requires expanded conceptual knowledge in own discipline and broadens capabilities. Understands key industry drivers; uses this understanding to accomplish own work. Has developed the foundational knowledge of DOD, Agency, and/or industry standards and program management requirements. No formal mentoring or advisory responsibilities; provides informal task guidance to new/less experienced team members. Solves problems in straightforward situations; analyses possible solutions using technical experience and judgment and precedents. No formal supervisory responsibility; works under team lead direction but may receive assignment to work independently. Bachelors degree or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Typically requires 2 to 4 years of relevant experience within the program.

KBRs Science and Space division is seeking a Terrain Monitoring and Modeling Scientist to support our Technical Support Services Contract (TSSC) at the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center (http://eros.usgs.gov/{target="blank"}) near Sioux Falls, SD (http://www.siouxfalls.org{target="blank"}).

The successful candidate will become an integral part of TSSC support for the USGS EROS Center Integrated Science and Applications Branch (ISAB). The T SC Team is comprised of highly talented remote sensing scientists, land cover scientists, software engineers, web developers, and systems engineers who work together to support the dynamic science and technical requirements of our USGS Customer.

This includes a wide-ranging portfolio of projects such as the upcoming production of a seamless 1-meter resolution elevation dataset for 3D Elevation Program (3DEP) support of the National Map.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Generate 1-meter seamless elevation tiles (converted/blended/integrated) using prioritized disparate 3DEP Original Product Resolution (OPR)Digital Elevation Models(DEM)
  • Project and transform data to map specifications (Continental U.S.)
  • Implement solutions to resolve areas of discrepancy in adjacent DEM sources.
  • Recognize source and derivative elevation model anomalies to mitigate error propagation.
  • Capture metadata
  • Execute quality assurance/quality control reviews and resolution.
