Position Summary Information

Position Summary

To keep the Heating Plant and campus steam infrastructure in good operating condition so as to supply steam to campus buildings. Duties Include:

Welding, making adjustments on equipment, replacing bearings, acetylene cutting, brazing, repairing or replacing valves, repacking valves.

Preparing boilers for yearly inspections.

Repairing and rebuilding stokers, grates, plates, gaskets, seals, etc.

Repairing and fabrication of coal and ash handling equipment, air washer, forced draft and induced draft fans.

Repairing and maintenance of steam turbines and air compressors.

Repairing and adjusting of water softeners.

Performing basic electrical work.

Lubricating all boiler house equipment.

Have knowledge of the operation of a steam generating plant and use of proper tools.

Repairing water pumps, chemical pumps and surge pumps.

Help with keeping adequate, but reasonable, stock of repair parts and arrange for the ordering of the same.

Repair/working on steam traps, gauges, and steam regulators.

Working with Maintenance/Heating Plant staff to maintain and repair the campus steam distribution system (underground/above ground).

Working as a Utility Plant Operator Il when needed.

Performing other related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications

One year of experience in performing skilled mechanical repair work involving heavy machinery; and such training as may have been gained through graduation from a standard high school; or any equivalent combination of experience and training.

Preferred Qualifications

Two years of experience as a Utility Plant Operator 1; or two years of experience performing semi-skilled work in the operation, maintenance, and repair of industrial, commercial, or institutional boiler plant systems and related equipment.
