Job Summary

This non-supervisory position is a highly visible field-based position responsible for public

safety within the City of South Burlington. Included in this responsibility are the

enforcement of laws and ordinances, public safety, control of non-criminal conduct, and the

provision of services to the community. Police services are provided to the City of South

Burlington 24 hours a day.

Essential Functions

Majority of duties, but not meant to be all-inclusive nor prevent other duties from being assigned as necessary.

1. Work varying shifts, generally 8, 9, 10, or 12 hours in length. Overtime beyond these

time frames may be required, including on scheduled days off.

2. Take necessary police action to ensure public safety, including the use of force.

3. Patrol the City of South Burlington in a car, on a motorcycle, or on foot to prevent

and discover the commission of crime, enforce State and local laws and ordinances,

respond to calls for service and emergency situations, and interact with the

community.

4. Operate equipment including vehicles, trailers, and scales, measuring devices, and

other investigative tools.

5. Objectively review information and secure evidence in connection with crimes;

arrests persons alleged to have committed crimes; search for and preserve evidence;

interview suspects, prisoners, complainants, and witnesses; respond to and

investigate traffic crashes. Appear in court to testify and present evidence.

6. Interact with community members firmly, courteously, tactfully, and with respect for

the rights of others.

7. Analyze situations quickly and objectively and determine the proper course of

action.

8. Use technology including computers, cameras, measurement tools, and traffic

measuring devices as part of job.

9. Respond to emergency situations.

10. Use computer systems to enter and track activity.

11. Investigate juvenile complaints.

12. Work with other divisions within the South Burlington Police Department and with

outside partners including neighboring police agencies, City departments, fire

services, mental health services, community justice centers, and others to solve

problems of crime, disorder, and other disputes.

13. Possible assignment temporarily or long-term to the Bureau of Criminal

Investigations (including CUSI or other SIU), Traffic Safety, Youth Services, Canine

Unit, or other specialized positions.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Must be at least 18 years of age.

2. Ability to speak and write English fluently.

3. High school diploma/GED or higher.

4. Ability to complete and maintain Level III training and certification as outlined by

the Vermont Criminal Justice Training Council and Field Training and Evaluation

Program.

5. Successful completion of psychological examination and physical fitness test at the

50th percentile (1.5 mile run and 500-meter row sprint).

6. Possession of a valid drivers license.

7. Completion of a physical examination by Department-appointed physician upon

acceptance of a conditional offer of employment.

8. Must be able to pass a pre-employment background test, including a polygraph.

Areas of great focus include criminal acts, motor vehicle offen ses, drug use and

history, excessive alcohol abuse, relationship issues, and other measures of an

officers moral compass and compliance with laws, regulations, and structure.

Knowledge & Experience

1. Working knowledge of law enforcement equipment and Vermont and South

Burlington laws and ordinance.

2. Ability to enforce the law impartially and to make sound judgments under stressful

conditions.

3. Ability to prepare detailed reports and records and to follow general or detailed

instructions.
