SCHEDULE

Monday-Friday, 7:00 AM-3:00 PM, Monday-Thursday 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Tuesday-Friday 7:00AM -5:00 PM. Hours may vary based on departmental need.

PAY RATE

$19.16 per hour

DESCRIPTION

Salary Range - up to $19.16 per hour

SUMMARY: Performs a variety of duties to ensure the proper operation of water meters and tapping machines.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:Not applicable.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:This list represents the types of duties required by the position. Other duties may be assigned as reasonably expected.

  1. Receives emergency calls.
  2. Inspects and installs Disc, Compound and Turbo water meters 5/8-6.
  3. Turns on and off water for starts, outs and shut off for non-payment.
  4. Locates, marks and exercises stop boxes.
  5. Locates water lines for all contractors.
  6. Inspects for low water pressure.
  7. Inspect service and main leaks.
  8. Confined space entry into meter pits to inspect or repair meters.
  9. Operates, paints, inspects, and flushes fire hydrants.
  10. Operates and repairs tapping machine.
  11. Confined space entry for 1-2 Taps.
  12. Operate valve truck for exercising or emergencies.
  13. Uses mobile work order system elink.
  14. Test new and used water meters.
  15. Dispatch using EnQuesta and eLink.
  16. Certified to test backflow devices of all sizes.
  17. Investigates various installations to make sure they are following The City of South Bends Rules and Regulations.
  18. Maintains records of all backflow preventers.
  19. Informs customers of malfunctioning backflow preventers with follow up dates to be sure repairs have been made.

QUALIFICATIONS:To perform this position successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty in a satisfactory manner. EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma or equivalent and one-month experience with water system maintenance.
  • Three (3) months experience as a plumbers' assistant or in the repair of water meters.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES PREFERRED

  • Ability to locate addresses in the city.
  • Ability to lift and carry 100 pounds.
  • Ability to follow instructions and complete reports.
  • Ability to deal effectively with the public.
  • Ability to analyze water leakage problems and to take corrective actions.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:Valid Drivers License required.

EQUIPMENT:Vehicle, laptop, various hand tools, water pump, tapping machine, portable jack hammer, compressor, tripod, gas detector, ventilator and backflow testing equipment.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, colo vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:Work is performed outdoors in adverse weather conditions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts. The employee frequently works in wet and/or humid conditions and is exposed to airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and vibrations. The employee is occasionally exposed to electric shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to loud. Ability to work in adverse weather conditions.
