POSITION SUMMARY:

This is a day shift position with normal hours of 0700 hours to 1500 hours, Monday - Friday. This is also an on-call position, and you will be required to work an on-call rotation with the other SBPD Crime Lab personnel and technicians.

The SBPD Latent Print Examiner primary responsibility is examination and comparison of latent finger and palm prints. Emphasis is placed upon processing of evidence for latent prints of value, the comparison of latent prints with inked impression, as well as other physical comparisons to identify or eliminate a subject. The Latent Print Examiner will conduct searches of latent prints in the Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS). The SBPD Latent Print Examiner may be asked to analyze data, comply, and control evidence, prepare documentation, make recommendations to the justice system authorities, and provide court testimony. This position will collaborate with other law enforcement agencies to include St. Joseph County Prosecutor's Office, FBI, ATF, and other law enforcement agencies, including our own.

Additionally, the SBPD Latent Print Examiner could assist in performing a variety of crime scene investigations duties within the police department or at other locations. This would require using various types of equipment to locate, process, secure, and package physical evidence for the scientific evaluation and comparison. This job requires meticulous attention to detail and preparation as the results of the Latent Print Examiner work could come under scrutiny of courts, juries, and public.

The SBPD Forensic Lab Tech will report directly to the supervisor or designee of the SBPD Crime Lab for daily assignments and duties and will be under general supervision of the Detective Bureau and any other Commanding Officer at the South Bend Police Department so properly designated.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Examine and evaluate latent fingerprints and palm prints and determine if it is suitable for comparison, identification or entry into AFIS. Enter all latent fingerprints not identified into AFIS and IAFIS and compare all possible matches and complete appropriate reports. Edit and verify AFIS ten print fingerprint submissions and notify the St. Joseph County Jail of discrepancies in individual's identification in AFIS. File and maintain latent print files and latent print lifts. Perform a variety of latent fingerprint development techniques and develop latent prints on evidence; record developed latent prints via photography (film or digital) or lifting with tape. Utilize the digital imaging workstation including digital photography, scanner, and Adobe Photoshop to enhance, save and print latent prints. Travel
