Position Summary:

The position reports to the Tax Manager – Indirect Tax and contributes to the complete, accurate, and timely preparation, reconciliation, and reporting on tax matters for the company with a primary focus on indirect taxes.

Essential Functions:

  • Prepares sales and/or excise tax filings on a complete, accurate, & timely basis as per the applicable due date.

  • Provides guidance to market staff and other internal parties on the proper treatment of excise tax, sales and use tax transactions. Reviews exemption certificates for proper completion and expiration date.

  • Reviews legislative updates, evaluates the impact to the business, and communicates such changes to key decision makers with the assistance of the Tax Manager-Indirect Tax and/or Treasurer.

  • Prepares and maintains tax records & information needed to complete various tax returns, related schedules, estimates, and extensions.

  • Prepares responses generated in conjunction with tax inquires/audits as assigned.

  • Participates in special projects as dictated by the needs of the business.

  • Participates & actively seeks process improvements in any and all work papers & procedures.

  • Maintains real and personal property tax schedules, ensures tax payments are timely processed, prepares the filing of annual declarations and rebate applications (ie BETE/BETR).

  • Participates in other treasury related matters as dictated by the Tax Manager -Indirect Tax, based on the needs of the department.

Experience:

Minimum 1-2 years of experience working in an accounting/tax environment.

Other Attributes Required:

  • Strong investigative technique, problem-solving and analytical skills.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to use good judgment in making decisions.

  • Intermediate to advanced MS Office skills, particularly Excel.

  • Working knowledge of GL accounting software, such as Sage Intacct.

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.

Education:

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business Administration or related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.

Certification and Testing:

None required.

Contacts:

There is frequent communication with the managers and employees in the treasury and accounting departments as well as Energy division managers and employees.

Decisions Made:

The Tax Accountant makes routine decisions related to performance of essential functions. Atypical issues are referred to the Tax Manager-Indirect Tax for guidance or resolution.

Safety Considerations:

Safety considerations relate to proper ergonomics in an office setting including appropriate work station and computer terminal setup. Safe and appropriate use of electronic equipment is expected.

Equipment Used:

Equipment used in this position includes a calculator, networked personal computer, printers, photocopiers, telephone and FAX machine.

Work Environment:

Work is performed in an office setting with controlled temperature and lighting. Infrequent travel is required.

Physical Requirements Analysis:

This position requires frequent sitting, standing and walking; visual acuity; frequent use of fingers to write, type and handle paperwork; frequent communication involving listening and speaking.

Weight or Force Moved:

There is occasional need to lift or move objects weighing more than 5 pounds such as computer reports and file boxes. Assistance is available for lifting heavier objects.
