Robert Half Director of Accounting in Southfield, Michigan

Company Overview: Join a multifamily property development company in the Southfield/Commerce/Oak Park area, Michigan, that has been dedicated to acquiring and developing affordable housing for over 30 years. They are expanding our team and looking for a Director of Accounting to oversee the financial health of our growing portfolio across Michigan.

Role Summary: Our Client is seeking a self-starting strategic thinker with proven leadership skills and a desire to learn all aspects of real estate. This role is pivotal in providing insightful analysis and recommendations to improve financial and operational efficiencies. The position is based in our Southfield office and reports directly to the CFO, with access to confidential and strategic information regularly.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Analyze and recommend improvements for financial and operational efficiencies across all affiliated real estate entities.

  • Oversee day-to-day corporate accounting and forecasting, including accounts payable, payroll, procurement, employee benefits administration, treasury management, and year-end tax reporting.

  • Manage ownership activities of affiliated real estate entities with third-party management companies, including coordinating annual audits and tax returns, reviewing annual budgets and monthly financials, and managing investor reporting.

  • Produce summary schedules tracking actual to budget results with a focus on forecasting cash flow for all affiliated entities.

  • Oversee corporate governance activities, including renewals, licenses, regulatory reporting, and dissolutions.

  • Lead financial aspects of transactional activities, including managing the draw process, coordinating cost certifications, equity installment draws, loan applications, and insurance claims.

  • Manage one internal staff member.

    Requirements

Skills, Education, and Experience:

  • 5+ years of experience in real estate or public accounting with a strong desire to learn real estate.

  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Advanced Excel skills are a plus.

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Accounting.

  • Experience with QuickBooks is a plus.
