Scot Forge Company Metallurgical Technician in Spring Grove, Illinois

This position will perform duties to mechanically and metallurgically test product to required specifications.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Actively participate in daily safety discussions to ensure the continued success of the program – maintain knowledge of process through training, perform scheduled observations, and provide quality feedback in order to promote safer work behaviors and conditions.

  • Review the testing requirements of each shop order with respect to customer and specification requirements set-up by Process Engineering. Communicate with Process Engineering to resolve non-conforming requirements.

  • Prepare samples for inspection under microscope or macroscope using specialized equipment while following standard testing procedures.

  • Operate metallographic microscopes and computer image analyzer.

  • Set up, conduct, and evaluate metallurgical tests/evaluations including metallography, optical emission spectroscopy, and macro & micro hardness.

  • Determine acceptability of test outcomes relative to the requirements. Document and input test results including completing necessary details for failed materials. Analyze test outcomes for failed materials and recommend corrective action.

  • Calibrate test equipment in accordance with standard procedures.

  • Perform duties of Mechanical Test Technician as needed.

  • Other duties as assigned.

    Qualifications:

    Education: Minimum High School Diploma or GED

    Required Skills:

  • Ability to work safely with caustic and acidic chemicals.

  • Proficiency in basic math

  • Safely operate in a laboratory environment using caustic and acidic chemicals

  • Preparation of metallographic specimens for examination using the appropriate mounting materials and etchants for the alloy

  • Identification and quantification of metallographic microstructures of several alloys systems

  • Operation of metallographic microscopes, photographic equipment, computer image analysis, mechanical testing equipment, and archiving software

  • Operation of Rockwell hardness and microhardness testing machines, macroscope and macro-photographic equipment, and Optical Emission Spectrometer

  • Proficiency using Microsoft Word and Excel

    Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:

    Metallurgy Laboratory (use of caustic and acidic chemicals) and Manufacturing Shop Floor environments.

  • This position will work under the direction of the department supervisor. This position may be required to learn/develop additional skills to flex to other departments/locations/shifts in order to service the business needs and meet customer expectations.
