We will be building and operating a high precision, high volume, fast passed, and highly automated test laboratory supporting the rapid characterization of new materials for the Department of Defense. This role is responsible for performing the duties to operate saws and water jet to remove metallurgical test specimens from sample material.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Actively participate in safety program to ensure the continued success of the program – maintain knowledge of process through training, perform scheduled observations, and provide quality feedback in order to promote safer work behaviors and conditions. Wear proper PPE.

  • Review shop order, including previous and subsequent operations, understanding the impact test removal on other operations including: prolong location, testing requirements, etc. Use production process knowledge to determine grain flow and Charpy notch orientation.

  • Provide own material handling. Replace scrap hopper and empty chip hopper.

  • Review material heat selections against shop orders received, verify order number, heat number, lengths, weights and number of pieces to cut.

  • Examine material visually for flaws or defects including incoming material and outbound specimen quality levels.

  • Check equipment for proper operating conditions, wear items, fluid levels and mixture concentrations utilizing TPM and 6S.

  • Load material into machine utilizing overhead crane and secure to ensure safe operation.

  • Train on and inspect lifting equipment to ensure the safe lifting and transport of parts.

  • Using procedures, specifications and/or test drawings, plan work and layout parts prior to cutting to maintain proper orientation of test specimens, maximizing remnant material, ensuring compliance and following the directions of the shop order and test sample drawings.

  • Layout test pieces for other operators to split using instructions written on shop routing.

  • Read and decipher complex test drawings to get all test specimens without cutting into other test specimens. Must have the ability to visual process in 3d to minimize saw time and maximize remnant material.

  • Program water jet cutting path and load parts to get essential pcs

  • Operate saw, verify dimensions of material before and throughout the cutting process, adjust machine stops, feeds and speeds as necessary to conform to specifications and given tolerances throughout the cutting process. Determine what saw blade to use.

  • Ensure customer material is in appropriate location. Cut and label test pcs per specifications. Place in customer test pans or cardboard boxes for shipment.

  • Complete production time cards ensuring that accurate records are maintained. Complete and move operation steps in production software.

  • Maintain test remnant material determining which residual material is valuable. Maintain traceability through effective marking and proper storage. Ensure proper identification recorded on completed part and router, following cutting to ensure traceability. Ensure proper storage of testing material is marked and in correct location.

  • Cut any additional test specimens that are requested from the Metallurgical Lab.

  • Complete necessary inspection and quality reports using measurement equipment maintaining tolerances and inspection of own work.

  • Replace blades as necessary. Monitor and report blade performance.

  • Remove and segregate scrap according to standard procedures.

  • Clean and sort test pans as needed from racks behind met lab from shipping date of sales order.

  • Place all nuclear orders in crates to be sent for storage, including all test specimens and extra material. Label with shop order #, heat #, material type and year. Request crates as necessary.

  • Communicate production and equipment problems to appropriate personnel.

  • Use time productively to ensure efficient departmental productivity and self-productivity.

  • Understand and follow the Scot Forge quality policy.

  • Work in cooperation with all fellow employee owners to sustain a strong team atmosphere.

  • Run multiple assets as required.

  • Ability to maintain a close attention to detail when cutting test specimens. That would include labeling, location, and traceability. Understanding the importance of level 1 material and DMC orders.

  • Brinell test prolongs and specimens when needed.

  • Knowledge of how other assets in the department operate and cut.

    Closing Statement:

  • Other duties as required in support of the Scot Forge Flex program

  • Follow all safety rules including wearing all mandatory PPE and keep work area in clean condition

  • This position will work under the direction of the department supervisor and the Flex labor manager. This position may be required to learn/develop additional skills to flex to other departments/locations/shifts in order to service the business needs and meet customer expectations.

  • This is a position that requires a high attention to detail with the respect that the pieces being tested are to certify parts that if cut incorrectly have the potential to jeopardize people’s lives.

  • Having a high regard of accountability and integrity knowing that the correct specimen(s) is being supplied when done with the task that is being performed.

    Qualifications:

    Required

  • High School Diploma or GED

  • Basic math skills

  • Pass a physical & drug test

  • Use of common inspection tools (calipers, tape measure, etc)

  • Blueprint Reading

  • Computer skills

    Preferred

  • Forklift

  • Overhead crane

  • Hand tools

  • Brinnell certified

    Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:

  • Able to lift 65 lbs (up to 5 times a day)

  • Shoveling of chips/swarf

  • Temperatures above 100 Deg, and below 30 Deg

  • Operate job duties in conditions where there is dirt, dust, loud noises

  • 10-12 hour work days, 60+ hours per week

  • Operate job duties in small areas and areas where pinch points exists

  • Climbing, overhead lifting, standing for long periods of time
