The Cell Therapy Platform and Discovery Research Team within the Therapeutics Discovery (TD) division of J&J Innovative Medicine undertakes research and development of Chimeric Antigen Receptor (CAR)-directed cell therapies. The Cell Therapy CAR Screening and Lead Selection Team is responsible for the discovery and optimization of CAR designs to deliver highly efficacious autologous and allogeneic CAR T cell therapy products.

In this position, the co-op will have the opportunity to contribute to the cutting-edge field of CAR T cell therapy and work closely with a highly skilled scientist on CAR T cell manufacturing to support therapeutic programs across hematological and solid tumors. The candidate will play a vital part in the generation, development, and optimization of CAR T cell processes. They will gain hands-on experience working with both alpha-beta (ab) T cells and gamma-delta (gd) T cells, as well as investigate various methods to enable high-throughput CAR T-cells generation. The research will focus on the identification of the most promising CAR design candidates for cell therapy applications.

The co-op student will:

  • Collaborate closely with a scientist on CAR T cell generation process development and optimization.

  • Assist in testing various methods, such as viral-based immune cell engineering to facilitate high-throughput CAR T cell manufacturing.

  • Troubleshoot technical difficulties encountered during experiments.

  • Work with ab and gd T cells, conducting experiments to evaluate the performance of different CAR designs.

  • Conduct data analysis, interpretation, and presentation using relevant software tools such as Microsoft Office, GraphPad PRISM, FlowJo and others.

  • Document detailed experimental procedures, results, and observations in electronic laboratory notebooks (ELN) to maintain accurate records.

  • Foster collaborative teamwork by actively participating in lab meetings, sharing ideas, and contributing to the optimization of laboratory protocols and techniques.

  • Maintain a strong commitment to safety protocols and adhere to laboratory guidelines while ensuring quality in execution of experiments.

Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing an undergraduate degree in Biomedical Engineering, Biology, Biotechnology, or a related field.

  • Basic knowledge of molecular and cellular biology techniques and common laboratory assays.

  • Strong interest in immuno-oncology with a focus on cell therapy.

  • Strong interest in automation technology for CAR T cells manufacturing.

  • Prior laboratory experience, aseptic cell culture, with preferred experience in culturing primary immune cells.

  • Excellent communication, organizational, and planning skills.

  • The applicant must be available and able to travel to Spring House, PA, to work during normal business hours.

The anticipated base pay for this position is Sophomore $24.00/hr, Junior $25/hr, Senior $27/hr, Master’s degree $32/hr.
