GE Aerospace HPT Supermarket – LEAP Turbine Airfoil Thermal Systems Design Lead Engineer in Springdale, Ohio

Job Description Summary

In this role, you will be responsible for the thermal systems design of the new high pressure turbine stage 1 blades for the LEAP program, with the objective to mature the design from the conceptual phase through engine test to meet the program objectives in terms of time on wing. You will have the opportunity to participate in multiple design iterations over short periods of time, rapidly gaining technical expertise and a deep understanding of the manufacturing process for your components.

The design activities will include all thermal systems characteristics, i.e. internal cavity definitions, film cooling, and purge design. During the design phase, you will closely collaborate with the turbine aerodynamics, mechanical design, and manufacturing teams to new designs are well balanced, meeting all requirements and keeping producibility front of mind. Once designed, you will lead the definition and the execution of component characterization tests, as well as engine endurance tests (including post-test teardown, hardware evaluation, and model correlation).

This team additionally aims to improve the state-of-the-art of turbine airfoil thermal systems by opening the design space and introducing new technologies.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Execute the design, analysis, or evaluation of assigned projects using sound engineering principles and adhering to business standards, practices, procedures, and product / program requirements.

  • Use engineering judgement and experience to challenge entrenched processes and methodology to recommend improvements. Apply knowledge of fundamentals to identify strong and weak drivers of component behavior, allowing efforts to be focused on the most impactful design levers.

  • Develop specialized knowledge in discipline. Serve as best practice and/or quality resource. Have awareness of latest technical developments in discipline. Contribute towards strategy and policy development and ensure delivery within area of responsibility.

  • Have in-depth knowledge of best practices and how discipline integrates with others; have working knowledge of competition and the factors that differentiate them in the market.

  • Use judgment to make decisions or solve moderately complex tasks or problems in areas of operational/product management, manufacturing, technology, or engineering. Take new perspective on existing solutions. Use technical experience and expertise for data analysis to support recommendations. Use multiple internal and limited external sources outside of own function to arrive at decisions.

  • Act as a resource and mentor for colleagues with less experience. May lead small projects with moderate risks and resource requirements. Explain difficult or sensitive information; work to build consensus. Develop persuasion skills required to influence others on topics within field.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited university or college

  • Minimum of 3 years' experience in Mechanical, Aerospace, or Materials Engineering.

  • This role is restricted to U.S. persons (i.e., U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and other protected individuals under the Immigration and Naturalization Act, 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3)) due to access to export-controlled technology. GE will require proof of status prior to employment

Desired Characteristics

  • Previous experience in design of Turbine Airfoils or other Superalloy components.

  • Flexible and friendly approach to working in teams.

  • Significant experience with thermal finite element analysis models, flow network modeling and Unigraphics.

  • Strong experience and familiarity with compressible flows and heat transfer fundamentals and hand calculations.

  • Documented experience of being a self-starter with a passion for problem solving and driving solutions, while constantly learning and mentoring others.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

  • Ability to document, plan, market, and execute programs.
