The Minnesota Board of Cosmetology (the Board) is dedicated to protecting the health and safety of Minnesota citizens and visitors by regulating the practice of cosmetology. The Board is comprised of seven board members representing each cosmetology license type and the public. Board staff is comprised of five divisions and more than 25 employees. The Board oversees more than 35,000 practitioners, 5,200 salons, and 35 schools across the state.

The Field Inspector will conduct inspections and investigations as a method to enforce and ensure compliance with Minnesota’s cosmetology statutes and rules. This position also requires explaining preliminary inspection results, guiding licensees to correct resources, and educating licensees and the public when necessary. Substantial travel is required, with an average of one day per month is spent in the office. Overnight travel throughout the state, including the metro area and greater Minnesota, is frequent and required. (25 weeks per year on average.) Field Inspectors prepare, finalize, and send inspection results using mobile phones, tablets, laptop computers, licensing database software, Office 365 software, Adobe Acrobat Reader, among others.

Field Inspectors are often the first and, in some cases, the only face of the board and are required to be able to communicate professionally and effectively with licensees and the public.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Communications skills sufficient to effectively explain the law, requirements and procedures; to listen well and respond appropriately; to answer questions, and to inform customers of non-compliance.

  • Customer service skills sufficient to deliver prompt, courteous and accurate information to licensees and the public in person, and through e-mail and other written correspondence while also effectively delivering elicit information with tact and diplomacy.

  • Database and task management software skills sufficient to develop queries, pull and analyze relevant data, create processes and compile data in appropriate report format.

  • Knowledge of communications sufficient to write, prepare, and edit materials, using correct spelling, punctuation, grammar, and sentence construction.

  • Ability to gather data through observation and asking questions sufficient to prepare and provide accurate reports that could serve as basis for legal or corrective action.

  • Ability to effectively manage assigned workload by working independently with minimal supervision, sufficient to complete work duties as assigned.

  • Ability to maintain an active, valid, and applicable Class D (basic) driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Post-secondary diploma in criminal justice, para-legal, law enforcement or a related discipline.

  • Experience in one of the following: inspections or investigations, law enforcement, legal, or in a regulatory environment.

  • Experience working in or knowledge of the cosmetology industry and Minnesota state regulations.

  • Experience presenting educational content in an encouraging way that motivates individual and group performance, compliance with rules and regulations, and correction of problem area.

  • Experience communicating and working effectively with people from diverse cultural, economic and ethnic backgrounds.

  • Advanced level attention to detail.
