How your work would contribute to our organization and the Twin Cities region:

TheSenior Technical Traineris responsible for analyzing, designing, developing, implementing and evaluating high quality technical training programs for Bus Maintenance personnel. The incumbent will provide instruction for all facets of the bus maintenance and repair processes including, but not limited to: Mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, air-conditioning electrical and electronic maintenance activities associated with transit bus vehicles to ensure safety, improve reliability, and maintain cost effectiveness of the fleet.

This individual will need to be able to quickly grasp complex technical concepts and make them easily understandable in the form of presentations and documentation. In this position, you’ll have an opportunity to combine your technical expertise to teach job skills and help our maintenance technicians improve their job performance.

What you would do in this job

  • Design and develop course outlines, syllabi, performance objectives, student guides, classroom slides, lab exercises, performance support tools and evaluation documents

  • Deliver technical training to maintenance personnel at local facilities for all three shifts

  • Continually evaluate course effectiveness and update materials as needed

  • Create project plans and manage multiple priorities with multiple deadlines

  • Prepare the classroom, equipment, training modules, materials etc. prior to class

  • Maintain/organize materials and equipment both inside and outside the classroom

  • Provide technical support to maintenance technicians upon request

  • Act as supervisor to students during classroom hours

  • Seek out industry trends on new training tools and strategies

  • Act as Garage Supervisor as needed

  • Miscellaneous duties as assigned

What education and experience are required for this job (minimum qualifications)

Any of the following combinations of related work experience that includesbothtechnical experience (bus or truck technologies, automotive technologies or similar) and technical training/instruction experience (reporting into a technical training department with a focus on course development, instructional design, adult learning concepts as well as delivery of training), AND completed education in Education, Engineering, Management, Business Administration, Transportation, or closely related field; AND at least one (1) year of supervisory, lead worker or project management work experience:

  • High school diploma/GED AND eight (8) years of total related work experience that must include at least four (4) years of technical work experience and at least four (4) years in technical training or instruction.

  • Associate degree AND six (6) years of total related work experience that must include at least three (3) years of technical work experience and at least three (3) years in technical training or instruction.

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher AND four (4) years of total related work experience that must include at least two (2) years of technical work experience and at least two (2) years in technical training or instruction.

    Metropolitan Council Employees Only:Successful completion of any one of the following four Metropolitan Council Leadership/Supervisory training programs will substitute for lead/supervisory experience. You must attach your certificate(s) as proof of completion of the program to your application. Only completion of one of the four programs listed below will substitute credit (6 months or 1 year) for lead/supervisory experience.

Metro Transit Leadership Academy = 1 year

Project Management Development Program (12-month session) = 1 year

Project Management Development Program (6-month session) = 6 months

Four Learning Institute Certificates - You must obtain all four certificates listed below to receive credit for 6 months supervisory experience.

  • Leading Self-Personal Effectiveness Certificate

  • Leading Self-Communication Certificate

  • Leading Self-Business Skills Certificate

  • Leading Others-Preparing for Supervisor Certificate

    License Requirement:

  • Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record.

What additional skills and experience would be helpful in this job (desired qualifications):

  • Experience as a technical instructor at a school or structured training department conducting hands on and classroom instruction.

  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint).

  • Experience in advanced technical and mechanical ability and aptitude in vehicle maintenance.

  • Experience developing courses for a technical or maintenance area (prefer bus maintenance).

  • Experience following an instructional systems design process.

  • Experience with using adult learning concepts.

  • Experience delivering technical training.

  • Experience working and/or training in a union workforce environment.

    What knowledge, skills and abilities you should have within the first six months on the job:

  • Knowledge of bargaining unit agreements.

  • Knowledge of maintenance and repair of Cummins diesel engines, Allison EV drives, Allison, Voith and ZF transmissions, pneumatic, hydraulic, steering, suspension, AC/DC electrical systems, multiplexing systems, HVAC systems and analog and digital electronics.

  • Knowledge of adult learning principles and their application.

  • Knowledge of training needs assessment methods.

  • Knowledge of heavy-duty vehicle maintenance principles and methods.

  • Basic knowledge of learning management systems, maintenance management systems and Adobe.

  • Knowledge of current audio-visual equipment use and care.

  • Knowledge of transit bus maintenance.

  • Proficient in using Outlook, Word, Excel, and Power Point.

  • Knowledge of current automobile repair and troubleshooting procedures.

  • Ability to communicate clearly in written and oral form.

  • Ability to manage multiple responsibilities and priorities simultaneously while working independently.

  • Ability to work well with employees and staff at all organizational levels.

  • Ability to transfer information from technical documents and troubleshooting guides into training materials and classroom presentations.

  • Ability to write reports, memos and business letters.

What your work environment would be:

Work is frequently performed in an indoor environment. However, the position may require occasional outdoor work with exposure to weather conditions. Work may require local travel to conduct training at various facilities. Work occasionally requires out-of-state travel to attend training and conferences. Work is performed periodically near moving parts, vehicles, lifting equipment and occasionally elevated positions. Position may result in exposure to noise, diesel exhaust emissions, welding fumes, and risk of electrical shock. Requires work in varying hours to accommodate all three shifts. Position is regularly required to speak, hear, read, and write and has vision requirements (close, distance, peripheral, depth perception, ability to distinguish colors, and ability to adjust focus).
