Assistant Professor in Classics

The Department of Classics at Stanford University invites applications for the post of tenure-track Assistant Professor in Latin literature, specializing in one or more of the following areas: Latin literature of later antiquity (3rd -7th centuries); Latin literature of the Imperial period (1st–3rd centuries); Latin poetry of the Augustan period. We particularly welcome applicants with competency in an additional ancient language (e.g., Hebrew, Egyptian, Coptic), as well as those with demonstrated skills in text-based ancillary disciplines (palaeography, epigraphy, papyrology), as well as broader interests in the theory and history of literature. Applicants should exhibit the potential to make scholarly contributions of the highest significance and impact.

Applicants should also have a consistent record of quality teaching, and demonstrate the pedagogical skills required to design and teach a variety of courses, in the original languages and in translation, at all levels, as well as to mentor undergraduate and graduate students. The annual teaching load is four courses over three quarters.

The term of appointment is expected to begin on September 1, 2025. The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. at the time of appointment.

The salary range for this position is $108,000 – $127,000, for academic year 2025–26.

The pay offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors including (but not limited to) the qualifications of the selected candidate, budget availability, and internal equity.
