Greenskeeper Leads work under general supervision and receive instructions and work specifications from a supervisor. Employees in this classification direct and participate in various phases of golf course maintenance including upkeep of fairways, greens, sand traps, buildings and grounds. Employees at this level do not have supervisory authority over other employees and are not expected to exercise independent judgment on final decisions regarding quality or quantity of work produced by such employees, or personnel actions such as hiring, promotion, discharge or disciplinary measures.

Responsibilities in this role include:

  • Assign and explain tasks to workers based on instructions specifications received from supervisor.

  • Inspect work for conformance with specifications.

  • Train employees to meet quality and quantity standards. ∙ Advise supervisor of work progress.

  • Lead a crew of greenkeepers assigned by the supervisor.

  • Make assignments and establish work schedules for regular and special work activities and maintenance projects.

  • Perform a variety of Greenskeeper duties (e.g., check condition of the golf course, repair sand traps, water greens and fairways, and has responsibility for mobile equipment used for golf maintenance, etc.)

  • Report unsatisfactory conditions on golf course to the supervisor and make and implement recommendations to resolve the unsatisfactory conditions.

  • Order supplies, maintain records (e.g., time and expense records, etc.) Adjust computerized irrigation systems.

  • Promote adherence to safety rules.

  • May perform any of the duties described in the Greenskeeper specification or other duties as assigned.

To be successful in this role, you will bring:

Minimum Education and Experience Required:

  • High school diploma, GED or equivalent.

  • This skill level is generally associated with a minimum of 2 years of golf course maintenance or a combination of equivalent education and work experience.

  • Know the characteristics and proper application methods of fertilizers and pesticides.

  • Ability to operate a computer.

  • Experience with proper standard pruning techniques. ∙ Experience with irrigation practices including irrigation equipment ∙ Ability to train others in various Greenskeeper functions.

  • Ability to efficiently organize and delegate work and effect good working relationships with others.

  • Uphold compliance with all safety practices and procedures.

  • Certificates and Licenses Required

  • Valid California Non-commercial Class C Driver's license. ∙ Qualified pesticide applicator’s certificate is highly desirable.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift bags of up to 60 lbs

  • Must have the aerobic capacity to run a brush chipper, walk mow the greens and walk distances of up to five miles a day.

  • Must be able to operate various grounds maintenance machines such as a blower and aerator.

  • Frequently stand/walk, twist/bend/stoop/squat, grasp forcefully and lift/carry/push/pull objects up to 10 pounds.

  • Occasionally reach/work above shoulders, light/fine grasping and lift/carry/push/pull objects up to 40 pounds.

  • Rarely kneels/crawl, climb and lift/carry/push/pull objects greater than 40 pounds.

Working Conditions:

  • May be required to work overtime, early mornings, evenings and weekends, including holidays, sometimes in inclement weather conditions.

  • Required to wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

  • Required to wear appropriate uniforms.

  • May be exposed to allergens such as dust and pollens and chemicals such as oil, lubricants, pesticides, fertilizers and paint.

  • May be exposed to noises greater than 80db.

  • May be required to work at heights greater than 4-10 feet.

The expected pay for this position is $32.18 to $38.80 per hour. Placement in the pay range is subject to the applicable collective bargaining agreement.
