SCHOOL/UNIT DESCRIPTION:

TheCenter for Democracy, Development and the Rule of Law (CDDRL), at Stanford University is an interdisciplinary center for research on development in all of its dimensions: political, economic, social, and legal, and the ways in which these different dimensions interact with one another. We seek to understand how countries can overcome poverty, instability, and abusive rule to become prosperous, just, democratic, and well-governed societies. We also want to analyze the ways in which democracy and development can be threatened by the authoritarian resurgence, technology, populism, and the broader process of globalization.

TheLeadership Academy for Development (LAD), is a practitioner-based training program that is based at the CDDRL. The LAD course is designed as an intensive, off-site, executive-level training program in partnership with a collaborating host institution. LAD engages emerging civic leaders and social entrepreneurs who are working to achieve or deepen democracy and social justice in some of the most challenging environments around the world.

POSITION SUMMARY:

We are hiring one (1) full time (100% FTE), benefits-eligible, fixed term Program Manager for 6-months (September 2024 through March 2025). Although not guaranteed, there will be potential for an extension/renewal following the initial 6-months upon additional funding commitments and/or programmatic needs. This position will be based on Stanford’s main campus and will be hybrid (3 days per week), subject to operational need. Employees must be available to come into the office for special events outside of their regular hybrid schedule.

The Leadership Academy for Development is an executive education program designed to give international mid-career professionals in government and civil society the tools needed to affect change in their home countries. In this position, you will work with a team of faculty from Stanford and other institutions to manage all aspects of designing, planning, administering, and evaluating these courses. You will manage and execute tasks such as program coordination with LAD’s institutional partners, monitoring program expenses and preparing budgets, evaluating each program upon completion, as well as refining program processes, etc. This position also entails management of a student case study writing program in partnership with Stanford’s Ford Dorsey Masters in International Policy. Tasks for these include hiring students and managing student workflows during the case study writing process.

CORE DUTIES:

  • Oversee and administer research activities by evaluating academic programs, making recommendations that impact policies and programs, and coordinating and implementing changes.

  • Collect and analyze data, create reports, review and explain trends to determine program effectiveness; formulate and evaluate alternative solutions and/or recommendations to achieve the goals of the program.

  • Teach and/or assist in the teaching and administration of courses. Create and/or advise in the development of curriculum. Make recommendations for course improvements.

  • Write and edit content for proposals, peer-reviewed publications, and other program activities under the general direction of PI. Assist with the development of research grants, (i.e., may suggest new funding opportunities, write portions of grants, and/or summarize data for grant support).

  • Represent the program or function as the key contact and subject matter expert within the department, unit or school and develop communications for internal and external constituencies. Organize and/or participate in outreach activities such as events, partnerships, fundraising, training, and conferences. Lead workshops and facilitate meetings.

  • Monitor expenses, budgets, and finances of the program. Make recommendations on funding based on program spend.

  • May oversee and train student workers.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education & Experience:

Bachelor’s degree and two years of relevant experience or combination of education, training, and relevant experience. Advanced degree may be required for some programs. Program administration and or research experience may be required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated oral, written, and analytical skills, exhibiting fluency in area of specialization.

  • Ability to oversee and provide basic direction to staff.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Frequently stand/walk, sitting, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, perform desk-based computer tasks.

  • Occasionally use a telephone, writing by hand, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 40 pounds.

  • Rarely sort/file paperwork or parts, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh >40 pounds.

  • Ability to use voice to present information/communicate with others.

  • On-campus mobility.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • May work extended hours, evenings or weekends.

  • May travel locally.

  • Occasional overnight travel.

  • May travel internationally to help with administration of LAD programs.

For On-site or Hybrid positions:

The expected pay range for this position is $70,000 to $99,000 per annum.
