Moran Towing Corporation ( www.morantug.com ) has an opportunity available for an Assistant Port Engineer, in our Transportation Division.This is a full-time, salaried, exempt position reporting to the Manager, Engineering Services. This position can be based in Staten Island, NY or in Tampa, FL.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Assistant Port Engineer, in consultation with the Port Engineers, manages the operation, maintenance, and repairs of the ballast water treatment systems aboard fleet tugs and barges with the goal of maximizing value and reducing downtime of the units. The Assistant Port Engineer will also aid the Port Engineers, as directed by the Manager, Engineering Services in managing engineering operations, maintenance, and repair of tugs and barges. The incumbent will also be responsible for the safety of personnel and property, technical expertise in Ballast Water Treatment systems, and direct support to onboard personnel.

Specific Responsibilities include, but are not limited, to:

  • Troubleshoots, repairs, and/or provides support to tugs and barges for onboard equipment with a specific focus on ballast water treatment systems.
  • Performs or manages vendors for required preventative maintenance for onboard equipment with a specific focus on ballast water treatment systems.
  • Provides logistical, project management, and vendor support as needed for Port Engineers and Vessel Operations Managers.
  • Provides additional troubleshooting and purchasing support to other Port Engineers and Vessel Engineers as needed.
  • Attends vessels as directed by the Manager, Engineering Services.
  • Recommends improvements to the safety management system, equipment operating procedures, and preventative maintenance system as needed.
  • Assists in the coordination of compliance with all regulatory, class, and customer requirements as directed.
  • Assists in the performance of fleetwide engineering operations.
  • Demonstrates full understanding of and compliance with:
    • Moran's policies and procedures.
    • Regulatory requirements.
    • Class rules.
  • Assists with managing maintenance and repair activities to ensure safe, efficient work is carried out by both Moran personnel and outside contractors.
  • Assists in the coordination of tug and barge certification inspections with classification societies, regulatory bodies, and external or internal customers.
  • Performs administrative tasks, including:
    • Creating and closing repair work / purchase orders.
    • Purchasing parts and services.
    • Reviewing and approving invoices.
  • Assists with the preparing annual repair and dry-dock budgets.


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Marine Engineering or related field, or equivalent work experience in vessel operations and repair.
  • Minimum of 2 years work experience aboard a vessel as an Engineer.
  • Technical proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Excel, and SharePoint).
  • Experience with maintenance management software programs.
  • Valid driver's license, passport, and Transportation Workers Identification Card (TWIC).
  • Ability and willingness to travel at least 40% of the time.
  • Ability and willingness to work irregular hours including nights and weekends.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience working on vessels as a Chief Engineer.
  • Previous experience with maintenance and repairs of ballast water treatment systems.
  • 2 years' experience working as a shoreside engineer maintaining, repairing, and supporting tugs and barges.
  • Experience working on ATB vessels.
  • In-depth knowledge of ultraviolet ballast water treatment systems.


WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Work is primarily performed on board ATB tugs and barges.
  • Position requires:
    • Ability and means to travel on a flexible schedule.
    • Periods of non-traditional hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.


Physical Demands OF THIS POSITION INCLUDE THE ABILITY TO:
  • Work safely and navigate in a marine setting.
  • Sit or stand for extended periods of time.
  • Frequent reaching with hands and arms.
  • Climb ladders, stairs, gangways, pigeonholes to access vessels.
  • Occasional crouch, crawl, or stoop.
  • Occasional lift and/or carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Adeptly use a computer, including good finger dexterity.
  • Hear and speak, including the ability to present to an audience.
  • Read printed material, graphics, and computer displays using close and color vision.
  • Withstand exposure to environmental conditions such as heat, rain, cold and or/humidity.
  • Perform inspections within confined spaces (limited access/head room).
