The Scientist ll - Gas Lab, applies professional scientific knowledge and techniques research or testing programs.  Performs well-defined experiments to studies of a complex nature within a specific scientific discipline.  The Scientist II is responsible for completing tasks, solving most of the associated technical problems independently, and may be required to coordinate the assignment with others working on related phases of a problem.  Must use judgment to evaluate and adapt laboratory requirements/guidelines to customer specifications and testing needs.  Because of the critical nature of the support provided, extended working hours (including weekends and holidays) are often mandatory.

Primary/Major Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Functions):

The Scientist II operates with a degree of independence under established policies and procedures. Normally receives sufficient guidance from Laboratory Lead, Scientist IV and/or Scientist III to assure coordination of efforts with other personnel working on related phases of the program.  Maintains infrequent technical liaison with customers, their representatives, and contact with other laboratory professional/scientific personnel. Knowledge of chemical principles, theories, practices, and established methodology in performing lab analyses with emphasis on gas and materials testing ( e.g, failure analysis of metals). Responsible to identify unknown materials / contaminants associated with rocket engine and propulsion systems.  Applies professional scientific knowledge and techniques to the investigation, study, analysis, and reporting of testing samples or research programs.  Performs well defined experiments or studies ranging from simple to moderate complexity.  Must be competent in the use of computer and computer software.  May be required to coordinate their assignment with other laboratory scientists.

Successful candidates for this position will have:

In depth experience using Scanning Electron Microscopes, X-ray and IR spectrometers, Gas Chromatographs and Material / Mechanical Testing equipment (e.g., hardness, tensile strength, etc.,).

Knowledge and experience to determine root cause failure of hardware - strong problem solving skills and able to work independently as well as in a team setting - capable of handling multiple projects and meeting deadlines (e.g. unplanned overtime).

The ability to analyze and monitor trace levels of gaseous contaminants in propellant and pressurant systems

Develops analytical methods and techniques for gas and cryogenic analysis. Utilizes various lab equipment to conduct gas analysis for rocket propulsion testing that includes (paramagnetic and zirconium O2 analyzers for O2 purity determination, electrochemical fuel cells for measuring trace oxygen levels, non-dispersive hydrocarbon analyzers for CO and CO2 determination, flame ionization analyzers for measuring volatile hydrocarbons, gas chromatographs equipped with TCD and Helium Ionization detectors for separating and measuring low concentration of gas components in permanent gases including para and ortho hydrogen) These techniques may involve adaptation or modified techniques to new situations, or new approaches.

Must be able to setup new analytical  processes and analyze  various  fluid samples  ( e.g. natural gas analysis for H2S, mercaptans, purity determination,  GN,   hydraulic fluids for impurities using X-Ray spectroscopy.)

Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills - to effectively extract and analyze data to generate comprehensive  technical and failure analysis reports.

Efficient computer skills, including knowledge of the Microsoft software suite -- image processing (combining and editing multiple image signals)
