Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):
Bachelor's degree (foreign equivalent or higher). In lieu of a degree, four (4) years of full-time directly related experience, or a combination of education and experience totaling four (4) years may be considered. Three (3) years of full-time directly related, progressively responsible operational experience. One (1) year of supervisory experience. Security, physical security, and/or training experience. Must have a security guard license or NY DCJS approved law enforcement exemption. Must have, keep and maintain the appropriate valid NYS Driver's License; have a motor vehicle record which is free from major violations or a pattern of repeat violations. Preferred Qualifications:

Additional years (2+) of supervisory experience. Experience in responding to calls in a large medical hospital/facility. Experience with hospital regulatory agency requirements and site surveys (i.e., Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), New York Department of Health (NY DOH), Office of Mental Health (OMH) and Joint Commission). Certification in de-escalation training. Experience with access control projects. Experience as a Police Officer or Security Services Assistant 2. De-Escalation Instructor. DCJS Instructor Development Course Certified. CPR Instructor. New York State Police Certificate. Professional Security Certifications. American Society for Industrial Security (ASIS) certifications (CPP, PCI, PSP). International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety (IAHSS) certifications (CHSO, CAHSO, CHSSO).
Brief Description of Duties:
The Assistant Director of Public Safety will be responsible for the protection and public safety operations for Stony Brook Medicine Enterprise, including but not limited to security shift supervision and ensuring a safe and secure environment. This position reports to the Director of Public Safety. The candidate must be able to motivate the team and ensure the highest level of professional service. Resource planning, personnel management, and developing partnerships with stakeholders is essential. The incumbent must possess the ability to quickly analyze evolving situations and adopt an efficient and effective course of action. The successful candidate must possess a broad understanding and working knowledge of security operations and management. This position is also responsible for ensuring a safe and secure environment for Stony Brook Medicine. The incumbent must possess excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills. The incumbent must be available 24/7 to respond to emergencies.

  • Protection and Public Safety Operations:
    • Manage a team of protection specialists, security officers, site and/or shift supervisors and supervise the day-to-day security operations of an assigned site(s) which may include, hiring/selection, scheduling, payroll, training, coaching, development and support.
    • Work directly with the Public Safety team to ensure the efficient functioning of security operations.
    • Respond promptly to critical calls within the facility.
    • Lead security response during crisis, providing clear directives to the team, coordinating with external emergency services, and ensuring the safety of all individuals involved.
    • Detain and restraint of patients and/or visitors in accordance with policies and laws as required.
    • Follow up and resolve identified security matters, complaints, and concerns.
    • Coordinate and anticipate security needs for event management to align with risk and security protocols.
    • Assist with the management and coordination of the hospital's internal and exterior screening programs.
    • Work with vendors to resolve issues and schedule service calls.
    • Identify and de-escalate verbal conflict and potential or overt acts of violence.
    • Respond to second level complex incidents involving disruptive visitors or patients.
    • Assist with the management, testing and troubleshooting of various security systems.
    • Conduct uniform inspections and ensure professional appearance.
    • Deploy resources in accordance with incident data.
    • Liaison with enforcement agencies.
    • Assist with the executive protection program across the healthcare enterprise.
    • Conducts risk assessments internally and externally to mitigate security threats.
  • Administration:
    • Collaborate with the Concierge staff on the visitor management system administration and operations.
    • Review and analyze data and generate reports for ongoing monitoring and quality improvement.
    • Assess existing safety and security measures and make recommendations for improvements.
    • Work with management to develop KPIs and recommend and implement changes.
    • Coordinate multidisciplinary meetings to address specific threats and concerns.
    • Participate in root cause analysis (RCA) activities.
    • Review electronic timesheets / timekeeping systems for completeness and accuracy.
    • Conduct after action reports (AAR) for all security related codes.
    • Utilize scheduling software to create and conform to daily shift assignment policies and procedures.
    • Communicate written and oral directives to subordinates.
    • Disseminate program updates and policy revisions received from higher level management.
    • Assist with onboarding / training of new employees.
    • Regulatory Compliance: Ensure compliance with relevant industry regulations, such as JCAHO, DOH, NYS OMH, HIPAA, and contribute to maintaining accreditation standards.
  • Training:
    • Develop and present security training presentations; lead interactive training exercises and contribute feedback to improve curriculum.
    • Conducts interactive emergency management exercises and participates in the planning of full-scale emergency drills.
    • Stay updated on the latest security technologies and tools and recommend the integration of advanced systems to enhance security measures.
    • Identify department training needs and create training modules for instruction.
    • Ensures all officers are trained to the current regulatory requirements and standards.
    • Participate in patient safety rounding and professional development seminars.
    • Conduct just-in-time training and surveys for continuous regulatory readiness.
  • Database and Reporting Operations:
    • Review departmental reports, documentation and databases for accuracy and compliance.
    • Utilize an incident database to review and write incident reports.
    • Review reports to ensure accuracy and compliance with department policies and procedures.
    • Responsible for tracking and analyzing data for the Hospital Security Management plan.
    • Review and respond to safety and quality reports.
  • Multidisciplinary/ Interdisciplinary Functions:
    • Interact with internal and external clients and provide excellent customer service.
    • Collaborate with Access Control to address physical security concerns and projects.
    • Cultivate and maintain relationships with leadership and staff in high-risk areas.
    • Act as a liaison with facilities staff to address physical security concerns.
    • Attending hospital huddle meetings, report issues and address concerns.
    • Participate on various committees and work groups.
  • Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.

Special Notes:
This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.In addition to the employee's base salary, this position is eligible for $3,026 UUP annual location pay, paid biweekly.Essential Position: This has been designated as an essential position based on the duties of the job and the functions performed. Positions that are designated as such may be required to report to work/remain at work even if classes are canceled, and the campus is working on limited operations in an emergency.Evening and weekend work will be required at times.
