Position Summary

At Stony Brook Medicine, a TH Instructional Support Assistant (Specimen Receiving and Phlebotomy Supervisor) is valuable member of the Department of Laboratories team. The position reports to the Speimen Receiving and Phlebotomy Coordinator. The incumbent is responsible for the day to day operations of the Specimen Receiving and Phlebotomy services including but not limited staff scheduling, workflow process, staff training and technical competencies and all other day to day activities. Qualified candidates will demonstrate superior patient care and possess outstanding communication skills while adhering to our high standard of excellence.

Duties of Position:

  • Responsible for the day-to-day operations of Specimen Receiving and Phlebotomy. Ensure that adequate of staffing is maintained at all times and to ensure all personnel adhere to the SBUH, Departmental and Regulatory Policies, Procedures and Standards. Collect various laboratory statistics on a regular basis. Training of staff for continued accreditation. Performs phlebotomies.
  • Responsible for inventory control program and ordering in Lawson.
  • Will exhibit service excellence in all interactions with clients, responding in a timely manner and providing accurate information. Acts as a liaison with all courier services utilized by the laboratory. Ensure that all necessary specimen-collecting supplies are provided to clients in Customer Service, Patient Service Center and Cancer Center. Provides clients with necessary paperwork. Maintains close contact with clients as assigned.
  • Utilize computer (LIS, SMS, Cerner) for patient care functions. Coordinate LIS Staff Training.
  • Assists in QA/CQI functions and problem resolution.
  • Assists in preparation of personnel, S&E, and capital request budgets.
  • Participation on Laboratory Compliance Committee or other relevant departmental committees and ensure staff adhere with all compliance plans as established.
  • Assists in ensuring compliance with all regulatory standards. e.q. NYSDOH CLEP, CAP, JCAHO, etc.
  • Adhoc projects as assigned.
  • Provides staff training as per established policies and procedures. Responsible for staff technical competencies.
  • Will perform phlebotomy on patients of all ages including newborns per established Policies and Procedures and will be competency assessed as per established Policies and Procedures.
  • In the event of the absence of the Specimen Receiving and Phlebotomy Coordinator, will temporarily assume duties of the Specimen Receiving and Phlebotomy Coordinator as assigned.
  • In the event of non-conformance ensures that procedures are not utilized until corrective actions have been taken and the process/system is properly functioning.

Qualifications

Required: Phlebotomy certification. At least 5 years of Phlebotomy experience for adult and pediatric phlebotomies in a hospital or health care setting. At least 5 years clinical laboratory experience in a hospital or health care setting. At least 1 year of supervisory experience is required. Experience with laboratory operations, laboratory and/or hospital based information systems. Excellent interpersonal and written skills. Clerical and Basic Computer skills (MS Office: Word, Excel, Powerpoint).

Preferred: Associates degree. Knowledge of creating staff schedules and workflow processes. Knowledge of Clinical Laboratory Regulations e.g., safety, quality systems etc.

  • Meet Regulatory Requirements for pre-employment screenings.
  • Provide a copy of any required New York State license(s)/certificate(s).

Anticipated Pay Range:

The salary range (or hiring range) for this position is $67,626 - $78,030 / year.

The above salary range represents SBUH's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. The specific salary offer will be based on the candidate's validated years of comparable experience. Any efforts to inflate or misrepresent experience are grounds for disqualification from the application process or termination of employment if hired.

This position offers an annual supplemental pay:

  • Location pay for UUP, CSEA & PEF full-time positions ($3400)
