Summary This position is located in Chickasaw National Recreation Area, in the Division of Interpretation and Visitor Services. Responsibilities - Planning and management of Interpretation, educational outreach, visitor services and the volunteer program. - Collaborate and partner with Federal, State, County and City agencies, educational institutions, non profit organizations, and private and professional organizations. - Engage diverse audiences in national park programming and partnerships throughout the community. - Serve as the park's Public Information Officer and liaison with Western National Parks Association. Area Information: The recreation area is located adjacent to the town of Sulphur, Oklahoma (population 6,000), 82 miles south of Oklahoma City and 140 miles north of Dallas, Texas. The towns of Ardmore and Ada, each with a population of about 25,000, are about 30 miles away. Springs, streams, and lakes in wooded and grassy hills typify the area. Elevation is 1,011 feet and the average annual rainfall is 38 inches. Summer temperatures sometimes exceed 100 degrees and winter temperatures of 20 degrees or lower are not uncommon. Both Sulphur and nearby Davis (population 3,000) have school systems with Kindergarten through Grade 12. Fully accredited colleges are available as close as 30 miles. Park ranger - interpreters connect people to parks. They play a key role in ensuring that visitors have a meaningful, satisfying, and safe park experience, help visitors decide how to spend their time in the park, and inform them about the wonders that await their discovery. Park ranger - interpreters are specially trained to engage the public so that each park visitor can find a personal connection with the meanings and values found in the places and stories of that park. They help visitors explore the many dimensions of parks by introducing them to a variety of perspectives. By providing the opportunity for visitors to care about the places they visit, they promote stewardship and the opportunity for those visitors to care for park resources. National parks are among the most remarkable places in America for recreation, learning, and inspiration. The work done by park ranger-interpreters through effective interpretive and educational programs encourages the development of a personal stewardship ethic and broadens public support for preserving and protecting park resources, so that they may be enjoyed by present and future generations. Requirements Conditions of Employment U.S. Citizenship required. Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication. You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. Qualifications All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-10/02/2024-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. For current Federal employees, if hours worked per week are not included on your resume, you must submit a non-award SF-50 for each federal position listed as part of your application to be used to validate your work schedule and determine the amount of qualifying experience that you will be granted. To qualify for this position at the GS-12 grade level, you must possess the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: providing a wide variety of Interpretative services to enable efficient operation of an Interpretive Education program or office; analyzing work functions and processes and identifying process improvements; planning and coordinating. Plans, implements, manages, and coordinates a comprehensive interpretive, education, volunteer, and visitor services program. Responsible for short- and long-range planning. Writes and updates interpretive planning documents. Prepares division standards and goals. Responsible for workplace health and safety of employees. You must include hours per week worked. Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Education There is no substitution of education for experience at the grade level of this announcement. Physical Demands: Most of the work is sedentary with some walking, bending, standing, and light lifting. Other situations require occasional strenuous exertion. The incumbent must be capable of lifting and carrying heavy objects up to 50 pounds. Occasionally, the incumbent will be required to work under emergency or other stressful circumstances calling for physical and mental stamina, emotional stability, and sound response. Required to operate a motor vehicle. Working Conditions: The incumbent works in an office, library, exhibit rooms, auditorium, classrooms, and in an outside natural environment. At times, the work requires handling live animal specimens. The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework only during an emergency or natural disaster. Documentation for the Land Management Workforce Flexibility Act (LMWFA) eligibility, You must submit ALL SF-50s and performance information for each period of temporary/term employment that qualifies for LMWFA. Performance documentation can be obtained by contacting the supervisors for the positions you served in during your 24 months.
