At Meta, we are creating the next computational platforms with AR and MR. You will be responsible for designing and productizing optical systems and sub-components that are core to delivering transformative experiences in Oculus AR/MR products. You will join an agile team that is laser-focused on releasing imaging and illumination optical systems and sub-components that are fully hardened for high-volume manufacturing (HVM). We are seeking an optical engineer with a proven experience in illumination design, non-sequential analysis of optical systems, stray light analysis in camera systems and able to work collaboratively across cross-functional teams and focused on execution while providing clear and effective communication to remove barriers across teams.

Required Skills:

Optical Engineer Responsibilities:

  1. Study the optical effects of various cover window design options to help choose the right ones that satisfy the optical as well as Product Design and Industrial Design criteria.

  2. Investigate the Stray light impact of cover windows on Camera and Depth sensor systems. Conduct stray light simulations for camera and depth systems in lens barrel structures and sensor sub-systems.

  3. Engineering Requirements Specifications for Cover Window components and work with the supply chain group to source cover windows.

  4. Hands-on lab work to validate the Cover Window specifications are being.

  5. Work with Reliability teams to understand the durability impacts of Cover Windows.

  1. BS in the field of Optics, Physics or other optics-related fields.

  2. Experience in taking optical products from concept phase to shipping phase in the consumer electronics industry (high volume products) and proven experience in developing optical systems with multi-disciplinary teams.

  3. Proven expertise in non-sequential analysis of optical systems using Zemax, Fred or LightTools (ideally, all of them) as applicable to camera and depth sensor systems.

  4. Experience with hands-on test, prototype build, debugging, and calibration of optical systems, equipment, and instrumentation (interferometer, spectrometer, scatterometer, lab microscope, hazemeter, roughness measurement tool).

  5. Experience collaborating with internal cross-functional teams as well as external optics vendors.

  6. Experience to articulate technical vision and communicate complex concepts with extreme clarity upwards, downwards and sideways.

Preferred Qualifications:

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Advanced degree (MS or PhD) in the field of Optical Engineering, Physics, Electrical Engineering or related degree.

  2. Experience designing and modeling imaging systems

  3. Knowledge of BRDF, BTDF, BSDF measurement tools and importing those data into optical software.

  4. Optical systems analysis and modeling experience. Eg: estimating SNR in optical systems, calculating light budgets for low photon detection systems.

  5. Experience in de-bugging and failure analysis of optical systems including knowledge of typical failure analysis equipment.

  6. Proficiency in data acquisition and image processing in MATLAB, Python, LabVIEW.
