Position Summary...

What you'll do...

As a Distinguished Architect for the Transactions Team at Walmart, you will be instrumental in defining the architectural vision and strategy for our retail transaction systems. Your primary responsibility will be to design, develop, and oversee the implementation of robust, scalable, and efficient architectural solutions for the transaction process.

In this role, you will be the guiding force behind our transaction process, ensuring that every customer enjoys a seamless, efficient, and secure user experience. Your work will directly impact the speed and reliability of transactions, contributing significantly to customer satisfaction and the overall success of Walmart's retail operations.

About Team:

Our team creates reusable technologies to help with customer acquisition, onboarding, and empowering merchants, while ensuring a seamless experience for both of these stakeholders. We also optimize tariffs and assortment in accordance with Walmart's Everyday Low Cost philosophy. We not only create affordability, but we also deliver customized experiences for customers across all channels - in-store, mobile app, and websites.

What you'll do:

As a Distinguished Architect, you will be instrumental in defining the technical vision and architecture of Transaction systems, ensuring they meet performance, security, and scalability requirements. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams, guide engineering efforts, and lead the adoption of cutting-edge technologies to build reliable, high-quality software solutions.

Architectural Leadership: Lead the end-to-end design, documentation, and evolution of the software architecture, ensuring alignment with business objectives, scalability, performance optimization, and compliance with industry standards.

System Design & Scalability: Architect large-scale, distributed systems using cloud-native technologies (e.g., Azure) with a focus on microservices, containerization (Docker, Kubernetes), and API-first design principles. Ensure the architecture accommodates growth and performance at scale.

Technical Mentorship & Leadership: Provide hands-on technical leadership, guiding engineers through design decisions, debugging, and architecture challenges. Foster a culture of continuous learning and innovation, ensuring that best practices around security, performance, and testing are embedded in the development process.

Cross-functional Collaboration: Work closely with Product Managers, UX/UI Designers, QA engineers, and DevOps teams to ensure technical feasibility and to optimize delivery pipelines. Facilitate discussions around trade-offs, priorities, and the feasibility of product features.

Code Review & Standards Enforcement: Define and enforce coding standards, design principles, and architectural best practices (such as SOLID, DRY, and design patterns). Conduct rigorous code reviews to ensure that code is secure, maintainable, and adheres to performance benchmarks.

Innovation & Technology Research: Stay up-to-date with emerging technologies and frameworks (e.g., Kubernetes, GraphQL, Kafka), and assess their potential integration into the system architecture. Lead efforts in prototyping new tools, technologies, and processes.

Project Oversight & Technical Delivery: Collaborate with Project Managers to align project timelines, milestones, and deliverables with architectural vision. Ensure that technical dependencies are identified and addressed early in the development lifecycle.

Clear Communication of Technical Concepts: Translate complex technical ideas into digestible concepts for both technical teams and non-technical stakeholders. Act as a liaison between engineering and business teams to ensure alignment and understanding.

What you'll bring:

  • Proven experience in the design, development, and scaling of software platforms for large user bases, focusing on modularity and extensibility.

  • Strong track record as an architect in building data-driven, scalable services with a platform-oriented approach to support growth and reliability.

  • Clear vision for future-ready Web and mobile architectures, with the ability to communicate effectively across all levels of stakeholders.

  • Platform-focused decision-making, balancing technical and business needs in fast-paced, complex environments to ensure performance and scalability.

  • Deep knowledge of frontend technologies, particularly in mobile, optimizing for scalability, performance, and developer efficiency.
