SUNY Upstate Medical University Maintenance Assistant in Syracuse, New York

Job Summary: Performs semi-skilled professional maintenance work, installation, alteration and repair of kitchen and patient care equipment, medical gas systems, pipes, fittings and fixtures of heating, heating control, domestic water and drainage, and other systems all according to specifications and plumbing codes as directed verbally, by task codes procedures etc. These systems are used by patients, guests, visitors, and all other customers within University Hospital and associated buildings. May perform the duties and tasks of a Grade 6 assigned to the Plumbing Shop. Must follow all safety precautions. Assist the GS12 Plumber/Steamfitter as needed, provide written reports, provide verbal information back to supervisor, complete daily paperwork, supervise and instruct lower grades, read blueprints, learn the NYS Plumbing Codes, maintain new and existing equipment. Properly demonstrate and use the tools associated with the Plumbing/Steamfitting Trade. Demonstrate the use of and be able to properly use a correct fire ext. Be able to trace and identify pipe for several systems. Interact with customers and properly relay information to them. Person must be free from beard and facial hair that may interfere with the fit or seal of a mask respirator at the time of fit testing. Such a mask must be worn in order to comply with State & Federal Safety Health Codes. Ability to perform moderate to heavy lifting. Ability to be able to stoop, bend, stretch, and stand for long periods of time. Ability to wear the a respirator. Ability to climb ladders and work at heights on scaffolds and platforms.

Must possess and maintain a valid New York State Drivers License.

Minimum Qualifications:

Two years of experience in maintenance work or mechanical work under the supervision of a skilled tradesman or completion of an appropriate two year technical school course.
