MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

A high school diploma or its equivalent and four (4) years of experience in laboratory work.

College or vocational/technical training can substitute at the rate of 30 semester, 45 quarter or 720 classroom hours for each year of the required experience provided such education includes three courses in the physical and/or natural sciences.

Certain positions within this class require individuals to meet specific federal or state regulations as identified by the employing agency.

JOB DUTIES:

Performs sample preparation, extraction, partitioning and cleanup of samples submitted for analysis. Performs sample custody functions. Prepares samples for routine and non-routine analysis. Prepares laboratory reagents and solutions and records all reagent information in appropriate logbooks. Documents observed inadvertent deviations from procedures in appropriate procedural logbooks. Maintains equipment used and records equipment information in appropriate logbooks. Maintains and evaluates lab critical temperature control systems. Provides support to the State Hemp Program.

Receives and examines samples submitted to the Laboratory for analyses to determine program assignments and storage requirements. Maintains sample custody of submitted samples, i.e., assigns sample numbers and batch numbers, checks samples in and out of storage, retains samples for appropriate time periods, maintains accurate records of sample locations utilizing the laboratory’s sample tracking system, physically discards samples when retention periods are complete, etc.). Accurately records and verifies sample information data in a wide variety of appropriate physical and electronic logbooks and databases. Creates sample coversheets and daily schedules from the database. Spikes samples with appropriate QC spiking standards using volumetric pipettes. Coordinates with lab managers to compile and archive lab data per customer requirements.

Discards hazardous waste materials. Collects and secures hazardous waste in appropriate containers. Labels hazardous waste containers according to SOPs. Keeps logbooks up to date on hazardous materials. Transports hazardous waste materials to satellite storage site. Maintains orderly laboratory chemical and supply storage in area of responsibility. Rotates incoming chemicals and supplies in order to utilize oldest stocks first.

Compiles and collates analytical batches in preparation for review by the technical program manager. Maintains inventory of laboratory supplies. Performs other related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of procedures, materials, and chemistry laboratory equipment obtained primarily from on the job experience and practices.

  • Knowledge of arithmetic and laboratory mathematics.

  • Skill in utilization of personal computer with database or spreadsheet software for recording and maintaining records.

  • Skill in operation and perceptive use of various laboratory equipment and glassware.

  • Skill in use of appropriate sample-handling techniques developed through on the job experience.

  • Skill in use of mini columns and solid phase extraction (SPE) techniques.

  • Skill in performing routine maintenance on laboratory equipment developed through on the job experience.

  • Skill in use of volumetric pipetting techniques.

  • Ability to effectively perform assigned sample preparation and chemical analysis using established laboratory procedures and tasks by understanding and following technical instructions and by applying acquired on the job experience.

  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations for preparing and diluting chemical reference materials/standards and reagents.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

  • Ability to plan, organize, and coordinate work assignments in absence of direct supervisor.
