Sr. EHS Manager, North America

Role Purpose and Organizational Reporting

Provide leadership, expertise, and practical support for Environment, Health, and Safety (EHS) at Indovinya manufacturing plants, R&D facilities, and offices, primarily in the NA region. The Sr. EHS Manager NA will ensure site practices are aligned with Indovinya’s EHS strategies, philosophy, policies, and applicable regulatory requirements.

This role requires working within a matrixed organization at a corporate level. It involves influencing sustainable change in cultural and technical aspects of sites and at all levels of the organization. The Sr. EHS Manager NA will focus on providing EHS expertise along with risk recognition/reduction skills, driving the goal of “Zero Unplanned Events” through a proactive, safe, and compliant work practice approach that utilizes prevention and mitigation techniques when assessing potential risks.

The Sr. EHS Manager NA is responsible for management of site EHS leaders throughout the region to include professional development and performance management. There are 8 direct and 44 indirect reports, exclusive of contractors. The position is a key member of the region’s EHS leadership organization, working with cross-functional teams throughout the segment, enabling, planning, implementing, and supporting key EHS elements. The position reports directly to the EHS Director NA and Eurasia, and indirectly to regional Manufacturing Directors, working closely with Indovinya EHS team members and leaders, Site Directors, and leadership teams to implement, monitor, and sustain EHS policies and programs at the facilities. The position may be based at the Indovinya headquarters in The Woodlands, TX or at one of the Indovinya manufacturing sites in the US region.

The Sr. EHS Manager NA will play a key role in enabling the following throughout the region:

Functional Responsibilities

  • Oversee the planning, implementation, and management of the EHS policies, procedures, and practices in accordance with IOD and IVL strategy, policies, and standards at IOD offices, manufacturing sites, and R&D facilities in region(s) of responsibility.

  • Ensure full implementation and maintenance of requirements pertaining to the RC 14001 EHS management system and certification for Indovinya sites.

  • Participate in target setting, annual planning of objectives and development of EHS Excellence Plans.

  • Understand the safety and health, environmental, process safety, security, hazardous materials transport, and other respective regulations that are the foundation of the Indovinya EHS program to include location specific regulations.

  • Oversee and coordinate regional emergency preparedness and response capabilities, including transportation incident management as well as emergency operations center (EOC) and incident command (IC) knowledge building and drill activities. Serve on the Indovinya Crisis Management Team, functioning as an EHS resource and liaison for regional incidents.

  • Develop and maintain relationships with regional/local regulatory agencies, mutual aid organizations, community advisory panels and occupational medical providers to assure compliance, good working relationships and positive community relations.

  • Ensure compliance with laws, regulations, reporting requirements, and Indovinya policy.

  • Provide input and assist in the development of new EHS programs.

  • Maintain interaction and alignment with Indovinya EHS team and peer Regional EHS Managers, seeking discussions of global best practices and incident learnings.

  • Conduct periodic site visits and field tours of facilities to detect existing or potential hazards, evaluate application of EHS procedures and work practices, and recommend corrective or preventative actions where warranted.

  • Participate in the incident investigation process, ensuring the appropriate level and depth of root cause analysis and identification of corrective/preventive action plans. Lead incident investigations when risk level warrants escalation Indovinya standards.

  • Provide and/or support justifications and strategies that enable investments in favor of EHS, through legal basis, studies and risk reduction plans that demonstrate the need to implement the requested investment for either CAPEX or fixed cost.

  • Harmonize EHS practices between the various regional locations, identify and share best practices, and foster collaboration and networking.

  • Oversee injury/illness case management programs to ensure consistent, proactive, and compliant practices are in place.

  • Ensure appropriate environmental and industrial hygiene monitoring is conducted and that industrial hygiene programs are in place and effective.

  • Lead regional efforts to reduce health risks associated with pandemics and other contagious illnesses.

  • Own the recruiting, hiring, and development of site-based EHS employees in the region.

  • Build capability of site EHS resources to support implementation and management of EHS programs and processes. Provide a roadmap for continued professional development leveraging EHS competencies.

  • Participate in industry conferences and meetings. Maintain current knowledge of EHS trends and practices in the industry to adapt to changing regulatory environment. Identify and implement best practices to continuously improve EHS practices.

  • Represent Indovinya in technical committees of trade associations by participating in meetings and activities, benchmarking with industry peers.

  • Formulate recommendations to site leadership teams using risk-based prioritization of EHS corrective and preventive actions and audit findings.

  • Monitor EHS scorecards consistent with Indovinya requirements for each location supporting continuous improvement of EHS systems including both leading and lagging indicators. Analyze metrics and review incidents to understand trends and align resources to focus on key areas.

  • Prepare and submit a monthly report on EHS performance and key activities within region(s) of responsibility, including an assessment of resource needs, headwinds, and successes.

  • Manage budget of regional and local EHS functions. Lead and generate regional governance of harmonization and standardization of practices that optimize fixed costs. Maximize the availability of regional EHS resources to provide support where feasible in lieu of external resources.

  • Facilitate continuity and improvement in risk management for surveys conducted by the risk insurers.

  • Participate in periodic EHS audits as identified in the annual Indovinya EHS Audit Plan. Support regulatory compliance inspections where warranted.

  • Management of EHS performance of contractors, defining the EHS pre-requisites to participate in service biddings, and periodically evaluate incidents, practices, and results through the contractor evaluation platform.

  • Interface with Indovinya Process Safety team resources to provide support and influence where needed.

  • Support and promote Environmental initiatives to optimize use of natural resources, water, energy, and reduce air emissions, greenhouse gases, waste generation and disposal, according to Indovinya Sustainability Strategy.

  • Support environmental compliance of the sites regarding environmental permits and licenses (air and waste), managing enough resources and planning activities.

  • Guarantee monitoring and implementation of best security practices at the regional sites.

Experiences/Education:

  • Minimum BS in Safety and/or Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or similar discipline.

  • At least 10 years demonstrated manufacturing experience of EHS leadership and at least 5 years’ experience in direct/indirect management of EHS professionals, chemical or petrochemical experience preferred.

  • CIH and/or CSP certification strongly preferred.

  • Strong working knowledge of MS Office, PowerPoint, Excel.

  • Occasional international travel and frequent regional travel required.

Skills & Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of EHS management systems including ISO 14001, ISO 45001, and ACC Responsible Care.

  • Knowledge of the best practices and pillars/elements of Process Safety Management, like the CCPS RBPS.

  • Demonstrated experience leading individuals and cross-functional teams.

  • Experienced in EHS auditing in a manufacturing environment.

  • Knowledge of Behavior Safety initiatives to develop maturity on Safety of the Indovinya sites (leadership and employees).

  • Positive and motivated self-starter with successful track record in changing environment; excellent organizational, teamwork and prioritization skills are essential.

  • Ability to communicate with clarity, impact, and passion to help drive a growing EHS program, and to collaborate across all levels of the organization to enable and drive change.

  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills with a demonstrated ability to influence and motivate teams. Ability to exercise strong judgement to balance business needs and achieve objectives.

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively facilitate, organize and manage multiple concurrent priorities, projects, and training programs.

  • Excellent written, verbal, listening and presentation skills.

  • Knowledge and experience in EHS Regulatory and Legal requirements and industry direction.

  • Fluent in English language, conversational Spanish and/or Portuguese a plus.
