Summary

The Health Physicist III/Sr is responsible for program ownership and provides a high level of technical experience and independent oversight over site Radiation Protection Programs including RP Operations, Radiological Effluent Monitoring, Environmental, Dosimetry, RP Instrumentation and Shipment and ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) programs to ensure compliance with regulatory and license commitments.

Provides consultation and technical expertise in Health Physics which supports the business needs of the station.

Performs complex radiological engineering analyses.

Trends data and makes recommendations/approves changes in programs.

Minimum Requirements

Health Physicist III:

A four-year Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering or a Physical Sciences discipline from an accredited college or university plus five (5) years of experience in radiation protection positions.

In lieu of a Bachelors degree, combination of college coursework and/or experience in radiation protection positions equaling nine (9) years.

Doctorate degree with an emphasis in Health Physics may be applied towards one (1) year of experience.

Master's degree with an emphasis in Health Physics may be applied towards one (1) year of experience.

National Registry of Radiation Protection Technologist (NRRPT) certification may be applied towards one (1) year of experience.

Health Physicist Sr:

A four-year Bachelors of Science degree in Engineering or a Physical Sciences discipline from an accredited college or university plus eight (8) years experience in radiation protection positions.

In lieu of a Bachelors degree, combination of college coursework and/or experience in radiation protection positions equaling 12 years.

Doctorate degree with an emphasis in Health Physics may be applied towards one (1) year of experience.

Master's degree with an emphasis in Health Physics may be applied towards one (1) year of experience.

National Registry of Radiation Protection Technologist (NRRPT) certification may be applied towards one (1) year of experience

Preferred Special Skills, Knowledge or Qualifications:

American Board of Health Physics (ABHP) certification.

Nuclear Experience

Nuclear requirement: Any PVNGS employee may be called upon to serve as a member of the Emergency Response Organization (ERO) and will be expected to fulfill their obligation as an ERO member.

Any PVNGS employee may be called upon to support a refueling or short-notice outage.

This includes line roles and responsibilities as necessary to execute outage activities.

These are conditions of employment at PVNGS.

Major Accountabilities

1) Provides a high level of technical expertise and independent oversight over site Radiation Protection Programs including RP Operations, Radiological Effluent Monitoring, Environmental, Dosimetry, RP Instrumentation, Radioactive Waste and ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) to ensure compliance with Federal and State regulations.

2) Performs radiological engineering calculations and makes technical decisions, regulatory interpretations.

3) Performs complex radiological engineering studies and provides in-depth analyses of the health physics aspects of the nuclear generating station (e.g., neutron spectral measurements and dose rates, internal bioassay analyses, external exposure evaluations).

4) Designs and conducts independent radiological research to investigate and validate technical bases used within RP Programs.

5) Evaluates emerging technologies and develops strategies to use those technologies for enhancing the radiological performance at Palo Verde.

6) Provides expert technical assistance to internal and external customers regarding health physics and radiation protection concerns.

7) Evaluates compliance with Federal and State regulations and industry standards regarding health physics and radiation protection activities.

8) Provides project oversight and management to ensure quality solutions that are technically sound and in compliance with established standards and regulations.

9) May direct the efforts of and/or support multi-discipline teams in performing strategic planning and problem solving to ensure strong technical radiological guidance.

10) Provides technical guidance and training to improve the overall technical competency of the RP Department.

11) Mentors less technically skilled personnel.

12) Prepares and presents complex study results in writing and orally to APS management.

13) Assists in the development of Emergency Response dose assessment scenarios and provides complex calculations and evaluations in support of the Palo Verde Emergency Plan and the dose assessment program.

Hybrid Role:

This position combines working in the office and at home, based on the needs of the business. The schedule will be determined with the hired employee and leadership, but the ultimate decision is the company's.

Any PVGS employees may be called upon for random Fitness for Duty (FFD) testing during scheduled working hours. Employees, if off-site, must report to FFD at Palo Verde as soon as reasonably practicable, but no more than 120 minutes after being notified. Employees who are onsite when notified will have no more than 60 minutes to report after being notified.
