    The Milieu Specialist provides leadership and oversight in patient care activities to maintain a safe and therapeutic treatment environment that meets the physical, emotional, and personal needs of patients. This individual works closely with Nursing Leadership to focus on units with high acuity issues to provide support and guidance for effective milieu management. This position includes but is not limited to:

  • Actively serves as a mentor and positive role model for staff, assists with training and educating Mental Health Technicians (MHT 1s and MHT 2s) and Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs), and helps facilitate adherence to the program structure on all units.

  • Facilitates groups and patient education, appropriate to the patient’s level of functioning.

  • Intervenes in escalated and emergency situations to guide, assist, implement, and/or role model proper de-escalation techniques and use of least restrictive measures.

  • Communicates closely with Nursing Leadership regarding unit needs, patient care issues, and staff performance.

  • Takes an active role in environmental management to promptly address any safety risks for patients or staff.

  • May be responsible for direct patient care as assigned by Nursing Leadership, including activities of daily living and basic nursing care.

  • Participates in patient education, staff development, team building, and program development and improvement, both at the unit and hospital level.

    Qualifications

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS OF THE POSITION:

  • Must be able to demonstrate special training, knowledge and skills specific to age groups, as well as job and/or program specific competency annually.

  • Must be certified in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation bi-annually.

  • Must complete all required mandatory in-services annually.

  • Must be tested for Tuberculosis with a PPD skin test annually or chest x-ray tri-annually.

  • Must be Handle With Care (HWC) Trainer or enrolling in next Trainer class.

    EDUCATION:

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent required;

  • Minimum two (2) years of education focused on nursing, psychology, social service, medicine or related field preferred.

  • Completion of EMT, CNA, Medical Assistant, Security Training program or equivalent preferred.

    LEADERSHIP REQUIREMENTS/EXPERIENCE:

  • Recognized leadership capabilities as evidenced by 2 letters of recommendation by co-workers;

  • Commitment to attend and participate in at least 75% of MHT Leadership meetings and help lead, as needed;

  • Commitment to participate in staff training/education and unit improvement projects;

    *CURRENT EMPLOYEES

  • Minimum six (6) months of experience as an MHT 2;

  • Employment status as full or part time employee for minimum of six (6) months;

  • No corrective actions at 2nd Written Warning or higher within past twelve (12) months;

  • Current HWC Trainer or commitment to become Trainer at next training opportunity.

    Knowledge/Skills:

  • Must be able to interact positively with patients whose behavior may be difficult, uncooperative or aggressive;

  • Must be capable of adapting to varying workloads and work assignments on a constant basis;

  • Must have schedule flexibility to meet the needs of the hospital and able to work on all units;

  • Must be able to perform concentrated and/or complex mental activity with frequent involvement in complex and/or highly technical situations;

  • Must be able to work successfully under highly stressful conditions;

  • Must be able to make sound, independent judgments based on scientific and/or ethical principles;

  • Must be able to collaborate with other multidisciplinary team members in an appropriate fashion;

  • Must have effective comprehensive reading skills, strong communication skills, written and verbal.

  • Must be able to comprehend and perform oral and written instructions and procedures;

  • Must possess a valid California Driver’s License in order to transport patients and/or staff, or drive hospital vehicles.
