Powertrain Calibration Engineer
Position Summary
Under general supervision, the Powertrain Calibration Engineer performs high performance engine calibration, tuning, and data analysis for Singer’s engine and powertrain projects and programs in a manner that demonstrates, “Everything is Important.”
This position is onsite at our headquarters in Torrance, CA.
Essential Functions
Hands-on development and calibration of engine controls and emissions strategies for high performance applications
Develop, document, and implement test procedures for engine calibration and performance development, including releasing process
Responsible for in-vehicle engine calibration and verification support of ongoing development programs
Provides guidance on test reports to help create and review for production planning
Develops, maintains, documents, and calibrates simulation models
Reviews data from multiple sources for performance and issue diagnostics on development cars as well as in the field
Supports engine dyno, chassis dyno, on-road drive tuning as well as track testing activities
Supports and maintains ECU and PDM programming and functionality
Interface with cross-functional teams to support powertrain performance and software testing, validation and systems integration
Self-motivated and able to perform tasks and projects with little supervision
Occasional travel required to support testing, certification work and track events
Performs other duties as assigned
Qualifications
Required Education/Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics or relevant field
Five (5) or more years of related experience in engineering and calibration for high performance engine applications.
Experience with emissions tuning and an understanding of compliance requirements
Experience with professional engine control and data acquisition systems, hardware, and software tools such as MoTec, Emtron and AEM
Experience with ETAS INCA, PCAN Explorer and Analyser software
Preferred Education/Experience and/or Certifications
Experience with Porsche air cooled engines
Broad experience with emissions tuning as well as an understanding of preliminary requirements, including CARB and EURO standards
Strong experience with professional engine control and data acquisition systems, hardware, and software tools
Skills/Abilities and Attributes
Strong diagnostic skills
Strong knowledge of internal combustion engine fundamentals
Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced high-pressure environment
Ability to work effectively in a small group of focused and talented engineers
Good verbal and written communication skills (clear and concise technical writing)
High level of computer literacy
Experience with data analysis and interpretation
Ability to express ideas clearly and actively listen to others
Team oriented, with a strong ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment to meet multiple deadlines
Excellent time management with an ability to balance multiple projects and timelines
Strong organizational, problem-solving, and collaborative skills with the ability to prioritize efficiently and effectively within and across departments
Positive attitude and strong work ethic
Physical Demands/Work Environment
Must be able to work in a seated and/or standing position for extended periods
Must be able to use fingers, hands, and arms at computer keyboard for extended periods
Must be able to bend, stretch, push, pull, and move with up to 10 lbs. of force
Must be able to wear proper PPE to protect against exposure to exhaust gases and noise
Must be able to continuously perform repetitive tasks; possess manual dexterity
Must be able to travel for business, including occasional travel by vehicle and commercial airplane
Must be able to work in a variety of indoor and outdoor environments – all seasons
Must be able to work non-standard working hours as required
As required, must maintain a valid California Driver’s License with a good driving record and appropriate insurance limits and/or be insurable under the Singer’s company vehicle insurance policy
Compensation
The starting salary range for this position is between $85,120 - 139,500 per year, plus an annual bonus plan. Actual compensation will be determined by skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
