This product focused position performs established technical tasks at the sub-system and/or component level for current and future products within a given business unit or corporate area. This involves work across many steps in the product life cycle. Because of the product centered nature of this position, they are very often a central point of coordination and decision making between product line engineers, customer teams, systems engineers, purchasing, suppliers and manufacturing.

Obtains input from stakeholders such as technical managers, project leaders, other product and manufacturing engineers and supplier partners to deliver information and recommendations that lead to quality product decisions.

Applies academic knowledge and existing experience to take action and make decisions that progress projects forward without sacrificing project quality expectations. Examples of these decisions include day to day project details, analysis or test work instruction details, coordination across discipline areas that are necessary to make quality progress.

Applies and improves processes such as Engineering Standard Work (ESW), iDFMEA, Failure Incident Review Group (FIRG) and tools such as 7-step problem solving, design review checklist and other specialized tools required to support the processes and enable high quality decision making.

Provides independent leadership of smaller business impact projects or ownership of complex components, products, systems or services with greater elements of ambiguity over the senior or lead engineer level and with full accountability to the project team.

Delivers independent execution of established and emerging work processes and systems, while still developing technology or product knowledge.

Leads the development and improvement of work processes and systems across a functional discipline area within a business unit site.

Coordinates and directs work amongst technicians and temporary student employees, assists in the transfer of knowledge to lesser experienced engineers through either indirect (scope of influence) or direct management of a small, local group of engineers.

Provides support and guidance to influence technical direction within a project team and continues to develop proficiency in the competency areas critical to success in the role.

Operates as a recognized specialist in a discipline or product area within the immediate team.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Requirements:

  • BSME (MSME preferred) with Minimum of 4 years of full time, direct, practical experience.

  • The applicant desired background and skills would include:

  • Experience with suspension systems.

  • Experience with Defense, Specialty & Off-Highway vehicle products and systems would be a benefit.

  • Design experience with structural components (forgings, castings, weldments)

  • Excellent understanding of static analysis, fatigue analysis and familiar with fundamentals of dynamic and kinematic studies

  • Knowledge and understanding of vehicle dynamics.

  • Excellent communication skills using multiple formats.

  • Well versed with all MS Windows software.

  • Familiarity with CREO Simulate and ANSYS is beneficial.

  • Cummins uses a hybrid work schedule requiring remote and in office work.

This position may require licensing for compliance with export controls or sanctions regulations.

Product Verification and Validation Management - Develops product systems validation plans from a variety of inputs to identify failure modes, while managing product risk and relative priority; negotiates product requirements against capability to guide project scope; evaluates analytical, simulation and physical test results to verify product capability and validate requirements; assesses legacy versus proposed system solution capabilities and produces recommendations with technical documentation to support product decisions.

Product Function Modeling, Simulation and Analysis - Impacts product design decisions through the utilization and/or interpretation of computational tools and methods that predict the capability of a product's function relative to its system, sub-system and/or component level requirements.

Education, Licenses, Certifications

College, university, or equivalent Bachelor's degree in Engineering or appropriate STEM field is required.

Post-graduate (Master's) degree relevant to this discipline area may be required for select roles.

This position may require licensing for compliance with export controls or sanctions regulations.

Experience

Prior Senior or Lead Engineer equivalent work experience in a relevant discipline area is required with a demonstrated track record of technical problem solving and quality decision making. Knowledge of MS Office tools is preferred.

Overview:

The Project Engineer reports directly to the Specialty Suspension Engineering Manager. The primary responsibility is application, design, develop, release, and management of projects for global Defense, Specialty & Off-Highway markets. This person will interface with customers, test labs, suppliers, facilities, and several internal groups (Engineering, Sales, Program Management, Etc.)

Principle Accountabilities:

  • Perform engineering analysis necessary for the production design, application and testing of components and systems. This will include the use of CAE tools such as CREO Parametric & Simulate, ANSYS, Altair Motionsolve, etc.

  • Manage all aspects of engineering products according to customer requirements with focus on coordinating project timing, costs, test plans and prototype builds.

  • Work with designers to release detailed drawing packages.

  • Establish good working relationships with team members, outside suppliers, customers, and various internal groups.

  • Provide leadership and mentoring for less experienced engineering staff.

  • Identify, verify. and implement solutions to warranty or quality problems that affect product performance.

  • Take part in the development of industrialization for the products.

  • Propose technical developments to reduce manufacturing costs.

  • Travel required as necessary to customers, suppliers, and manufacturing plants, expected less than 10% but possibly more.

Compensation and Benefits

Base salary range is $84,800.00-127,200.00. Pay rate will commensurate with experience. Additional benefits vary between locations and include options such as our 401(k) Retirement Savings Plan, Cash Balance Pension Plan, Medical/Dental/Life Insurance, Health Savings Account, Domestic Partners Coverage and a full complement of personal and professional benefits.
