Cummins Inc. Senior Field Test Technician in Troy, Michigan

DESCRIPTION

We are looking for a talented Senior Field Test Technician to join our team specializing in Engineering for our Cummins Inc. facility in Troy, MI.

In this role, you will make an impact in the following ways:

  • Maintaining Equipment : Performing test stand installations, troubleshooting, and maintenance will keep laboratory equipment in top condition, ensuring smooth operations.

  • Supporting Engineering : Providing recommendations for equipment supplier evaluation and qualification will help improve equipment and facility standards.

  • Enhancing Procedures : By performing tests in accordance with established procedures, you will contribute to the consistency and reliability of testing methodologies.

  • Versatility : Performing various duties as required will highlight your adaptability and willingness to support the team in multiple capacities.

RESPONSIBILITIES

To be successful in this role you will need the following:

  • Health and Safety Fundamentals : Champion proactive health and safety behaviors. Identify, report, and participate in actions to improve health and safety, contributing to an injury-free workplace.

  • Data Acquisition : Prepare samples, verify equipment calibration, and perform tests according to approved procedures. Ensure the data collected is accurate, dependable, and can be trusted by engineers and customers.

  • Data Reporting : Clearly document and present testing methods, instrument settings, data, and analysis. This will help engineers and customers understand the results and make accurate conclusions and recommendations.

  • Product Function Test System Design : Interpret test equipment specifications and select appropriate equipment, instrumentation, and software. Ensure the lab equipment meets the requirements and supports the infrastructure.

  • Test Setup and Configuration : Determine the optimal location and orientation for test setups. Fabricate the required system with appropriate materials, ensuring compliance with local safety and environmental requirements.

  • Test Article Build : Assemble test articles according to test requirements, including necessary installations for instrumentation. Ensure the test articles can successfully undergo product functional tests.

  • Preventative and Predictive Maintenance : Develop and execute preventative and predictive maintenance strategies based on machine and tool maintenance records. This will drive continuous improvement within the manufacturing process.

  • Problem Solving : Use systematic analysis processes to solve problems and mentor others in effective problem-solving. Implement robust, data-based solutions and ensure actions are taken to prevent problem recurrence.

Education/Experience

High school diploma, certificate of completion of secondary education or equivalent experience in an appropriate STEM field is required.

Regionally applicable certification or two-year associate’s degree from an accredited college or university in a relevant field of study may be required.

This position may require licensing for compliance with export controls or sanctions regulations.

Requires significant relevant work experience or specialized skills obtained through education, training, or on-the-job experience.

QUALIFICATIONS

Additional Information

Position is on-site 5 days per week either at Cummins in Troy, MI or traveling to customer sites.

Overview:

Facilitates selection of fleets and vehicles to fulfill CVS product field test needs. Arranges and performs installation of prototype and production hardware. Conducts regular evaluations/inspections of field test hardware, when necessary, verifies duty cycles and vehicle maintenance records, and reports product performance results. These individual transforms generally stated project test plans and needs into specific field test installation and tracking procedures. This field test specialist is expected to perform well without supervision; travel frequently; and have CVS product and fleet experience.

Minimum Requirements

  • Directly related experience with heavy vehicle systems.

  • Associate’s degree in engineering technology is preferred.

  • Excellent computer, organizational, and interpersonal skills are required.

  • Availability to travel 2 weeks per month (could be more, could be less)

  • CDL is preferred.

Principal Accountabilities

  • Estimate workforce needs and schedule installations and evaluations to meet plan/commitment.

  • Provide technical direction and training to professionals, mechanics and drivers as required as it applies to Cummins/Meritor components being evaluated.

  • Identify and organize fleet test support material requirements effectively.

  • Able to improvise and to adeptly manage unexpected complications.

  • Maintain timely effective liaison with various internal and external functions/organizations.

  • Discern, document, and communicate significant vehicle/product performance results.

  • Establish terms and conditions for field tests that are mutually beneficial to CVS and the test fleets.

  • Maintain disciplined system for selecting fleets that optimizes field test cost-benefit results.

Other Responsibilities

  • Complete assignments effectively and assists others when required.

  • Identify and correct unsafe conditions.

  • Safely store/inventories and identifies parts and tools.

  • Maintains records on work performed, analyze information and report results.

  • Maintains good housekeeping, safety practices and supplies.
