Portland General Electric EMS Engineer in Tualatin, Oregon

Designs, develops, installs, manages and/or maintains equipment used to control and monitor systems, equipment and processes. Ensures these systems and processes operate efficiently, reliably and safely.

Specifies and maintains systems and applications used by the System Control Center. Develops operational requirements and specifications of various systems and applications. Develops operational plans, procedures and documentation to support operations of the System Control Center. Provides support to NERC reliability.

Key Responsibilities

Engineering Standards:

Maintains currency in state-of-the-art engineering practices and discerns need for and provides guidance and direction on engineering processes and standards to colleagues.

Follows changes in process control, data communication and regulatory standards [e.g., Telecommunications Industry Association (serial communications, ethernet), International Electrotechnical Commission, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers] and applicable regulatory requirements; advises on applicability of those standards across the organization.

Follows changes in Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) standards and SCADA Protocols IEEE 1815-DNP3 and ICCP–IEC 60870-6/TASE.2 and advises on applicability of those standards across the organization. Thorough knowledge of IEC61850, CIM-Common Information Model.

Engineering Production:

Prepares a variety of complex engineering deliverables for larger or multiple projects; coordinates multiple discipline activity.

Develops procedures and job aids for design, configuration, operation and maintenance of the system.

Guides junior engineers in performing EMS-related tasks; ensures adherence to standards for configurations in EMS and Data Historian; ensures EMS maintenance tasks are well coordinated to have minimal impact on operations; performs compliance-related tasks; investigates complex operational issues pertaining to EMS and System Control Center’s T&D and Balancing Area operations.

Project Coordination:

Actively coordinates with other internal/external team members on moderately complex projects, including representing the team to interdepartmental stakeholders.

Provides support to System Control Center dispatch during storm restoration efforts; works with NERC Compliance team to ensure compliance through tracking various requirements.

Knowledge Sharing:

Serves as a technical specialist and provides consultation/guidance to project teams in a particular practice area; actively fosters knowledge management and provides mentoring; implements resource-management strategy.

Trains junior engineers and field technicians.

Education/Experience/Certifications

Education:

Requires a bachelor’s degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited engineering program or program accredited by an equivalent agency.

Experience

Typically 8 or more years in related field or 5 or more years in related field with PE license or advanced degree.

Certifications, Licenses and Training:

Professional Engineering (PE) license strongly preferred; may be required based upon role.

  • Advanced knowledge of energy management applications such as Automatic Generation Control and Power System Network Modeling. Knowledge of distribution system control applications and schemes such as distribution automation and volt var optimization schemes. Knowledge of controls used in managing distributed energy resources and demand response applications.

Compensation Range:

$81,450.00 - $160,500.00

Actual total compensation, including a performance based incentive bonus, is commensurate with experience, skills, qualifications, education, training, and internal equity. While we anticipate the selected candidate for this position will fall towards the middle or entry point of the compensation range, the decision will be made on a case-by-case basis.
