Portland General Electric Senior Meteorologist in Tualatin, Oregon

This role is located in the Portland, Oregon area (Tualatin) and will be hybrid with some days remote and some days in the office.

Portland General Electric is seeking an atmospheric scientist to work as a trade-support meteorologist within in its Power Operations department. The successful candidate will work closely with energy traders/schedulers, risk management, balancing authority operators, wind/thermal generation plant personnel, and others on a day-to-day basis and will provide them with clear and concise weather forecasts to support their operations. The successful candidate will collaborate extensively with the Day Ahead and Real-Time traders.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Provide weather forecasts to energy traders to help them gain insight into how the weather affects power and natural gas prices.

  • Provide daily written and spoken wind forecast for Day-Ahead and Real-Time.

  • Participate on long-term trading strategies regarding renewables energy.

  • Load forecasts that inform PGE’s risk management procedures, and plant and balancing authority operations

  • Create hourly wind forecasts for day-ahead schedulers using a combination of publicly available models and wind vendor forecasts

  • Analyze historical weather and energy production data and deliver reports to a variety of stakeholders.

  • Be point of contact for PGE’s wind/solar vendors, and work with vendors to ensure timely and consistent delivery of forecasts.

  • Interpret meteorological data and forecasts and communicate the forecasts/impacts to end-users.

  • Provide energy forecasts for PGE’s wind/solar portfolio to energy traders and schedulers.

Backup Responsibilities:

  • Assist storm preparedness and power restoration efforts by providing concise, detailed forecasts during periods of extreme weather to a variety of stakeholders.

  • Work with Wildfire Mitigation and Resiliency department to create/improve risk-assessment models for wildfire and other weather-related hazards

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in meteorology, atmospheric sciences or other related field or equivalent experience.

  • Eight or more years of related work experience, or combination of work and education.

Desired qualifications:

  • Three or more years of weather forecasting experience in the energy and renewables sector

  • Advanced knowledge and application of meteorological methods, techniques, and theory

  • Advanced knowledge of Pacific Northwest weather patterns

  • Some experience with scripting languages like Python and SQL for data analysis

  • Experience with Excel and Tableau

  • Ability to write technical documentation for internally developed products and modules

  • Experience preparing findings and presenting complex technical information to both technical and nontechnical audiences.

  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to efficiently handle multiple projects and requests.

  • An understanding of the fundamental drivers of power and gas prices other than weather, such as transmission congestion & natural gas storage reports

  • An understanding of how LMP electricity markets work, particularly the CAISO Energy Imbalance Market (EIM)

  • Some knowledge of the power and gas trading, and risk management concepts

Driving/travel/commute: Hybrid commute, travel within service territory occasionally

Compensation Range:

$87,225.00 - $173,875.00

Actual total compensation, including a performance based incentive bonus, is commensurate with experience, skills, qualifications, education, training, and internal equity. While we anticipate the selected candidate for this position will fall towards the middle or entry point of the compensation range, the decision will be made on a case-by-case basis.
