Amity Foundation Counselor (Demonstrator II) in Tucson, Arizona

Job Summary:

The Counselor (Demonstrator II) responsible for providing group and individual sessions and related rehabilitative treatment services to substance abuse students in a residential setting. Provides direct services and related rehabilitative treatment services to substance abuse students in a therapeutic community setting.

Essential Duties:

• Complies, evaluates comprehensive social, legal, and personal histories of students. Interacts with student's family, attorney, probation/parole officer, and other individuals or agencies of significance to the student.

Observes, records, evaluates changes in appearance, behavior, and demeanor of the student, while maintaining accurate and timely student records of sensitive nature. Prepares reporting and documentation as required by Amity and contract compliance. Protects student's health, safety, welfare, and confidentiality of student records.

• Frequently follows up with students' daily community living progress. Ensures the student is provided with personal necessities and are taught how to set up and maintain a clean, inviting and hospitable living environment. This is Inclusive of Preparing daily, weekly and monthly student activities that are engaging, interesting and challenging. Develops and maintains skill in preparing, setting up, hosting Amity community seminars, gatherings, ceremonies, etc.

• Collaborates with the Circle Tree community to define the student’s role in community, acknowledges accomplishments, special events and teaches the vision and values of the community. Learns how to support ceremonies, and how to conduct them properly. Participates in community building activities, faculty staffing and other activities as required by position.

• Assists with training and guidance of the Counselor I (Demonstrator I) when needed.

• Conduct shift change turnovers when needed.

• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:

Required:

• Bachelors' degree in a behavioral health field and one-year experience in a Substance abuse or behavioral health treatment facility 

OR High School diploma or equivalent G.E.D., and a combination of Behavioral health education

work experience totaling a minimum of 2 years; OR Knowledge of therapeutic community processes, methods, and design, including small-group dynamics.

• Experience using Microsoft Office Suite, Electronic Medical Record or similar software.

Preferred:

• Experience with the fundamentals of the Therapeutic Teaching Community.

• Understand of causes, symptoms, and effects of substance abuse.

Certifications or Licenses:

Required:

• Within ninety (90) days of hire, obtain First Aid and CPR certification AND pass a physical examination and tuberculosis test from a health professional

Preferred:

• State accredited Substance Abuse Disorder Treatment (SUDT) certification or equivalent AOD counselor licenses.

Skills/Abilities:

• Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

• Ability to maintain confidential information.

• Ability to operate general office equipment.

• Demonstrates an understanding of human emotions with a high level of empathy.

• Ability to exercise an amount of empathy and understands the importance of role-reversal.

• Demonstrates skill in patience, active listening and interest in diverse life stories.

• Good verbal and written communication skills with a genuine enthusiasm for helping people.

• Ability to maintain sensitivity and objectively under pressure generated by association with substance abuse students.

• Demonstrates proper attitudes and techniques and techniques to residential students

• Frequently required to sit and/or stand for extended periods of time.

• Frequently sitting and typing for extended periods of time.

• Frequently able to communicate verbally and in written form.

• Frequently able to use all types of vision, such as close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception, to complete daily tasks

Work Conditions:

• Generally, in an indoor office setting

• Occasionally works in outdoor elements such as heat, precipitation, and wind.

Environmental Conditions:

• The noise level in the work environment is moderate but can be loud.

• The temperature in the work environment is usually moderate to cool but can be cold or hot.

Travel:

• May travel locally as needed.

• Assists with training and guidance of the Counselor I (Demonstrator I) when needed.
