Summary The Assistant Chief/ Residency Co-Director dental officer serves as a practicing dentist who performs a full range of professional dental procedures in connection with the treatment of commonly encountered dental diseases or dental health problems requiring standard corrective, restorative, and/or preventive measures. The incumbent will provide direction and supervision of dental staff and is responsible for dental clinic administration at their assigned location. Responsibilities The Assistant Chief/ Residency Co-Director dental officer serves as a practicing dentist who performs a full range of professional dental procedures in connection with the treatment of commonly encountered dental diseases or dental health problems requiring standard corrective, restorative, and/or preventive measures. The incumbent will provide direction and supervision of dental staff and is responsible for dental clinic administration at their assigned location. VA offers a comprehensive total rewards package. The duties of the Assistant Chief/ Residency Co-Director include 70 percent clinical and 30 percent administrative responsibilities. The provider should possess the expertise and competency to perform the following: Makes oral and radiographic examinations of the oral cavity. Provide consultation and treatments within the scope of their specific clinical privileges. Providing outpatient, inpatient care for patients eligible for dental care. Diagnose pathological or irregular oral conditions. Function as the primary clinician or subject matter expert responsible for performing procedures, education and training affecting the daily clinical operations of the subspecialty. Administers local anesthesia. Periodically examine or evaluate patients to determine need for further dental care. Performs routine and complex restoration or extractions of teeth. Performs endodontic procedures and surgeries. Performs prosthetic dentistry to include immediate dentures, full dentures, partial dentures, crowns, and fixed bridge work. Performs complex periodontal procedures and surgeries, including soft and hard tissue grafting, maxillary sinus augmentation, and simple and complex implant surgery. Performs dental treatment in the operating room setting with the dental residents. The Dental Residency Co-Director coordinates the dental residents' educational activities. This includes overseeing clinical training, ensuring compliance with program requirements, and facilitating opportunities for professional development. Helps set up the dental residency program. This includes assisting in the development of curricula, organizing lectures and workshops, and coordinating assessments to evaluate residents' progress. Assigns works to subordinates, approves leave, prepares performance plans, administers discipline, resolves grievances and complaints, provides training and awards Works with Dental Chief for planning, developing, coordinating, and directing the clinical services of the Dental Department Prescribes medications within defined scope of dental practice. Orders relative diagnostic studies such as laboratory tests or radiographs. Provides education and counseling of patients and families in preventive care, medical conditions, and use of prescribed treatments and drugs. Conducts Compensation and Pension (C&P) Exams as requested by Veterans Benefit Administration (VBA) and Regional Office with training and privileges. Assist in meeting Performance Measures for clinical dental care. Completes all mandatory training requirements timely, attends mandatory medical center committee meetings and complies with computer and privacy directives. Coordinates with service leadership to conduct appropriate service recovery attempts with Veterans who express dissatisfaction in the care delivered. Initiates Human Resources actions for vacant positions, interviews and selects candidates alongside Dental Chief Work Schedule: Full-time, permanent, Monday-Friday 7:30 am - 4:00 pm or 5/4/9 schedule. A "5-4-9" schedule, includes eight workdays of nine hours each plus one workday of eight hours within the biweekly pay period. Example: 1st week: Monday - Thursday 7:30am to 5:00pm; Friday 7:30am to 4:00pm; 2nd Week: Monday - Thursday 7:30am - 5:00 pm; Friday off Work schedule of actual days worked and time off can be discussed with your department Supervisor. Requirements Conditions of Employment U.S. Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Qualifications To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Physical Requirements: Must be able to perform the duties physically and mentally in a hospital setting under normal and emergent conditions. Heavy lifting 45 lbs. and over with assistive devices. Heavy carrying of 45 lbs. and over with assistive devices. Reach above shoulder, use of fingers and both hands required. Walking or standing up to 6 hours per day. Repeat bending up to 2-4 hours per day. Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination. Near vision correctable and hearing aid permitted. Education Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are: Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted, or Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted. For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, facility officials must verify with the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) that the applicant has met requirements for certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant. [If the applicant does not claim an ECFMG certificate, facility officials must still confirm that the medical school meets (or met) ECFMG eligibility requirements for the year the candidate graduated.] NOTE: The Under Secretary of Health or designee in the VHA Central Office may approve the appointment under authority of 38 U.S.C. 7405 of a physician graduate of a school of medicine not covered above if the candidate is to be assigned to a research, academic, or administrative position with no patient care responsibilities.
