Summary The incumbent serves as Boiler Plant Operator within the Maintenance and Utilities Section, Maintenance and Operations Division of Engineering Service performing a variety of tasks in the performance of Boiler Plant operations in support of the mission and goals of the Medical Center. The operator must maintain a constant observation over the controls, gauges, and charts to make necessary adjustments for proper fuel and airflow to maintain system pressure. Responsibilities Major duties listed but not limited to: Tests, adjusts, maintains, replaces, and repairs Boiler Safety Devices such as flame safeguard systems, pressure switches, pressure differential switches, limit switches, timers, water column safety devices, electric/electronic probes and sensors, steam safety valves, and automatic and manual fuel valves for the purpose of preventing major pressure vessel failures and/or furnace explosions Visually inspects Boiler settings and refractory linings for signs of deterioration and failure due to heat stress resulting in flue gases escaping into the plant and endangering on-duty personnel Uses electronic, hydraulic, and pneumatic controls, charts, recorders, meters, gauges, and computer-generated data to determine adjustments or correction necessary for proper Boiler Operations or changing load requirements Uses tools such as manometers, multi-meters, combustion analyzers to control pollutants, tests gauges, infrared thermometer, and dead-weight gauge tester to maintain, replace and repair auxiliary equipment Adjusts fuel feeds, volume and velocity of draft and other firebox variables to maintain combustion efficiencies, prevent unexpected shut downs and prevent possible furnace explosions Maintains and analyzes the Boiler Water Treatment program Performs other duties as assigned Work Schedule: Rotating Days and Nights Position Description Title/PD#: Boiler Plant Operator/PD679-7661A Recruitment Incentive: Not Authorized. Preferred Experience: Boiler operator and maintenance experience. Physical Requirements/ Working Conditions: Physical exertion includes such action as lifting, pushing, pulling carrying objects of varying weights and sizes. Work requires kneeling, stretching, pushing, pulling, crouching, stooping, bending, climbing, walking and standing for long periods on concrete floors and corrugated steel catwalks and confined spaces. Operators work indoors and occasionally work outside for short periods where they are subject to prevailing weather conditions. Additional Information Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior work experience or military service experience. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
